Education A good portion of my work has involved continuing medical education (CME), but I also write patient education materials, meeting summaries, medical and health articles for magazines, and promotional materials for health-related institutions. Just before freelancing, I worked in medical communications (“med-com”) for 4 years, writing educational materials for doctors, nurses, sales reps and patients. Prior to that, I was a writer, editor and creative services director at the University of Maryland at Baltimore (schools of medicine, nursing, pharmacy, dentistry, law and social work), writing and producing magazines, newsletters, brochures, web pages, and other materials. My first writing job was as a clinical science writer for the American Society of Health-Systems Pharmacists. I worked
my way through college by assisting in physicians offices. Sitting at my
computer today, I find it hard to believe that I once gave shots, drew blood,
assisted in surgery, took out sutures, and did allergy skin testing. But I
think these other work experiences have helped me understand my audiences and
clients. I also did a brief stint in pharmaceutical salesmarketing asthma
medications to Baltimore pediatricians. And, of course, I did laboratory
research as part of my graduate study work. I have a
master's degree in pharmacology from Dartmouth College/Medical School, and a
bachelors in psychology from the State University of New York at Buffalo.
Ive taken many continuing education courses, including journalism,
creative writing, layout and design, project management, public speaking,
photography, and French. My graduate school training emphasized neuroscience, and much of my writing has involved neurology--including Alzheimer's disease, ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis), epilepsy, depression, Parkinson’s disease, multiple sclerosis, schizophrenia, and pain. My most recent work has focused on cardiovascular disease, hypertension, asthma, diabetes, and glaucoma. I have writing experience in many other therapeutic areas, including vaccine-preventable diseases, infectious diseases, oncology, orthopedics, pulmonology, obstetrics/gynecology, gastroenterology, and psychiatry. I live with my husband in the Baltimore-Washington DC area. We have a daughter in college and currently share our house with two Havanese dogs and three pet birds. I work as a volunteer for Howard County Pets on Wheels (which links pet owners and their pets with residents of nursing homes, adult day care centers and group homes) and the Metropolitan Washington Ear (which provides a radio reading service for visually impaired persons). I recently took up knitting and can be found on the knitters’ “Ravelry” site as “BunnyLove.” |
