Hi Don:
I saw your blog and wanted to let you know that I'll be attending 49ers this year. I arrived at Tech in 1969 and met many wonderful people from all over the world. Much to my dismay however, the ratio of women to men was terrible. At that time we had about 880 enrolled and of that number there were about 100 females. I and a group of friends formed FIMF (Female Importation For Male Fulfillment). We arranged a computer dating service for 49ers and St. Pats and sold tickets at the cafeteria to our friends and anyone else who was interested in meeting women. Our deal was simple - pay the fee and be guaranteed a date and access to a party or two - hopefully with a girl that had similar interests as determined by the FIMF team. We would then visit sororities at UNM and offer the brave hearted and adventurous lasses a wild weekend at Socorro complete with a bus ride there and back, accommodations at the Val Verde Hotel and one or two parties. On the bus ride from Albuquerque we would make the match ups. What fun!!
We averaged about 40 - 50 girls per event. As far as I know we were directly responsible for one marriage and many a happy lad and lass as well.
Once when we approached the student advisory committee looking for funding for one of the parties, Fred Kilmer the Dean called our group PIMPS not FIMFs. So there is a bit of history from the 1969 - 1974 era.
All the best and hope to see you at 49ers.
