- Why do I need a building inspection?
As of January 1, 2005 the state of Wisconsin has made it mandatory that all municipalities adopt and conform to the building
code requirements found in the Uniform Dwelling Code (UDC). This results in each municipality (or the state)
providing for building inspection of all new construction of one- and two-family dwellings, including any additions and/or
alterations to homes built after June 1, 1980.
- What is the Uniform Dwelling Code?
The statewide code for newer homes in Wisconsin is the Uniform dwelling Code (UDC), Chs.
Comm 20-25 of the Wisconsin Administrative Code and its adopted references. It is a uniform building code that replaces numerous
local or non-existent building codes for new homes. Municipalities may not adopt a more or less stringent code. The UDC was
developed and is updated with input from a citizen's Dwelling Code Council.
