Experience
Home-based, freelance contractor
Levittown, Pennsylvania
Full-time, January 2001 - present
Part-time, October 1995 - January 2001

I began taking on freelance writing and editing assignments as a newlywed in October 1995 to help make ends meet. These early jobs were primarily small potatoes, such as resumes, cover letters, term papers and business flyers, but they were welcome opportunities for me to sharpen my growing base of editorial skills. After a few years, I was tackling meatier projects—editing a brochure for Empire Mortgage Services (1998), ghostwriting five promotional articles for Household Helpers (1998), and providing brochure copy for Serrano Suites (1999). By the end of 2000, I was making plans to resign my position as Production Editor at MMS Education in order to pursue personal endeavors and a freelance career.

In January 2001, I became a full-time, home-based independent contractor. I have been exceptionally fortunate to retain MMS Education as a client, and through that relationship, I have had the pleasure of working on many professionally rewarding projects. Since 2001, I have edited lesson plans for the National Endowment for the Humanities website EDSITEment. In 2002, I developed two foreign-language lessons for EDSITEment—La Familia and French and Family. Also in 2002, I edited the educator’s guide for the PBS presentation Only a Teacher.

I have worked on several research projects during the past few years as well. I conducted a competitive analysis of elementary-level science exhibits, and state textbook and standards research for the Field Museum in 2002. I also made substantial contributions to the Briefing on Teacher Quality report to the Bank of America Foundation. In 2003, I investigated the latest findings on multimedia learning and analyzed the competitive market for the Kunhardt Productions presentation Freedom: A History of US. For the Law School Admission Council, I conducted product branding research.

On the Web, I have written and edited content for several Internet sites, including MMS Education, Christopher Columbus Awards and SCI Technologies. To help promote these and other websites, I have developed and carried out a six-point marketing campaign that includes designing and distributing direct e-mail and viral e-mail communications; writing and/or editing customized electronic press releases for relevant listservs, newsgroups and online press outlets; submitting sites to search engines; and requesting links from other related websites.

In addition to my ongoing work with MMS Education, I have been pleased to work with other clients on a diverse range of projects. In 2001, I worked with the international office of Vandex, a dedicated graphic artist and a ColdFusion programmer to build, edit and launch the website of Vandex USA. I continue to manage this site on behalf of Vandex USA. I have also helped independent writers develop their fiction and non-fiction work, and have assisted fellow editors with surplus projects.
