2005 VHF Contest pictures from CN98
on Green Mountain @ 2950ft.
.jpg)
K7MDL/R 10GHz setup with towel to
keep the light rain and cold wind
off. Pointed south at N7EPD and
KB7DQH/R on Poch's Peak in CN96 84
miles away on USB no problem. This
is Sunday afternoon on Green
Mountain in CN98 at 2950ft. The
snow topped mountain to the left is
Mt. Pilchuck with the often visited
"bench" area visible just to the
immediate left of the dish.
Everett is about 90deg to the right
from this angle. The black box on
the back is velcro'd in place and is
a 15.36MHz TCXO connected into the
directional coupler to act as a
reasonably accurate marker generator
at 10368.088MHz. I added a crystal
oven to the brick PLO last week, and
after a short warm up I found Eric*2
within 3 KHz of where I expected.
145.092 should be 10368.100 after
full warm-up. W7NBH in eastern
Washington CN96 came in strong on
this angle on 6M through 1296,
presumably working the bounce off
Mt. Rainer. It was mostly dry
except when we wanted to work 10GHz!

The FT-817 IF rig display shown in
the picture above is the S7/S8 from
N7EPD & KB7DQH/R stations. They
were about equal in strength with
roughly equivalent stations at
15mW. My setup is about 90mW at the
dish feed which is a reverse splash.
which from what I can tell might be
only 20-30% efficient. Most of the
dish is used to support the front
cover, not reflect signals. The
noise floor sits about S3/S4 so they
put out a strong signal, intercom
quality.

The above pictures are the rover
truck interior setup with and
without flash a little later in the
evening at CN98. The antenna setup
(8ft yagis on 144, 222, 432, 903,
1296, and a 6M loop) is about the
same as in the other pictures on
this site, except I replaced the
1296 antenna since the old one was
fragile and self destructed over
several trips and was non functional
last September at CN78.
Traveled 4 grids, CN87, CN97, CN88,
and CN98. The plan was to limit the
road miles, stay closer to home, but
extract every last QSO from each of
the 4 grids.
Started off at high rock road in
CN97 at 900ft, then moved to Mt.
Anderson at 3000ft. south of
Bellingham to be able to work
VE7DXG/R and VE7DAY/R roving down
east Vancouver Island. I worked a
surprising amount of VE7 stations
especially from CN79 that I have
never heard on before on all bands
to 1296.
I returned home Sunday at 2am and
then resumed at 10:30am Sunday to
stop at Monroe High School parking
lot, which was not a bad spot at all
for a easy quick CN97 stop, and then
stopped at Lord's Hill Regional Park
at 600ft in CN87 south of Snohomish,
WA. Finished the contest in CN98 on
Green Mountain.
