What is VOIP?
VOIP stands for Voice over Internet Protocol. That’s great you say, what the heck does that mean. IP (or Internet Protocol) is the language that is used to transfer data over the Internet. You can transfer email, files, pictures, and video, almost anything. So, VOIP is the ability to transfer voice data over the Internet.
Does VOIP work?
Yes, you can make normal everyday phone calls over the Internet. Just think of your Internet connection as a new age phone line.
How does it work?
It is a service like any other, just like your cable TV, regular phone, and cell phone. You need 3 things; a high-speed Internet connection (like a cable modem or DSL), a VOIP service provider (like Vonage or Lingo) and then you need a device that can allow you to plug a phone into your current Internet connection.
Can I call anyone?
Yes, phone calls can be made to anyone; you can even send and receive faxes.
Can I use a normal phone?
Once you have the correct hardware installed you can use any normal phone you want, from an old rotary phone to a brand new 5.8 Ghz cordless phone.
Do I get all the normal features of a phone?
Yes, depending on your service provider. Most providers support Voice Mail, Caller ID, Call Waiting, Call Forwarding, plus a whole array of other features that normal phones do not. The services will differ depending on your provider.
How much does it cost?
There are normally some setup fees, just like there are when you get a new phone in your house, and generally monthly service runs around $30 a month for unlimited calls to the US and Canada
