The Shoulder Collar - A Technological Breakthrough

    Some types of harness in the ancient world consisted of bands around the horse’s neck, attached to either a pole over the horse’s back or to straps on either side, and a breast strap that wrapped around the horse’s chest just under his jugular. These methods restricted the horse’s ability to put his whole weight into pulling the load, since they produced pressure on his windpipe. The shoulder collar shifts the load from the horse’s neck and chest to his shoulders, allowing him full breathing room.
