The Shoulder Collar - A Technological Breakthrough
Some types of harness in the ancient world consisted of bands around the horses neck, attached to either a pole over the horses back or to straps on either side, and a breast strap that wrapped around the horses chest just under his jugular. These methods restricted the horses ability to put his whole weight into pulling the load, since they produced pressure on his windpipe. The shoulder collar shifts the load from the horses neck and chest to his shoulders, allowing him full breathing room.

This is a new site. Any information, suggestions or contributions would be greatly appreciated. I am particularly interested in material on the use and training of horses in Asia. Please email me at: mmaidens@verizon.com.
