| ZACK'S CRYSTAL RADIO, MARCH, 2004 |
|

Prior to Zach's visit, I had some time to gather up all the parts he would need to build his radio. Having never had
to wind a coil before was quite an effort for him and with a little help and guidance from me, we managed to wind a decent
looking coil for the radio.

Using a 6" X 6" 3/4" piece of pine wood, we proceeded to build the radio using 5 components. I found
some brass thumb tacks at the store and Zack used them to secure each component in place on the block of wood. The project
took us about an hour and a half to complete.

After completeing the the crystal radio project, it was time to test it out. I wish I had a camera when Zack put the
headphones on and connected the antenna to the radio for the first time.
His eyes just lit up and a smile from ear to ear could be seen. Another success story of a young child discovering the
world of radio.

This is the schematic and parts list that Zack used when building his crystal radio.
Zack is 10 years old, so any youngster or oldster for that matter can build a crystal radio just like this one. You can
have the same fun building it and feel the same excitement when hear your first radio broadcast from a simple, no battery
powered crystal radio.
Have fun building this radio. Then you will know why I enjoy building them even at my age.
