Here's a wonderful thing. Texas is full of nice people. Now you get your nasty folk now and then, too, but by far the majority are friendly. It's pretty simple here. Just show you are friendly and have a sense of humor and you're in. These guys care about each other. Who would you like living next to you? I can't tell you how many families are ready to 'adopt' us single folks. I've been invited to all sorts of family gatherings and treated just like one of the family right from the start. Neighbors let me ride their horses any time, even when they are not home, since there is a sense of trust in other people that is greater than you can imagine. But, alas... as more people move here from out there, it's beginning to change, especially in the bigger cities.
Texans love their state, and the state flag is everywhere. Consumer products are often Texas-ized to capitalize on that pride. It shows in the relative cleanliness on the sides of the roads.
Like when getting a car serviced, you can always start a conversation with someone you're waiting in line with. Waiters and waitresses make you feel they want you to come back. Neighbors can drop by any time and the kids in the neighborhood are great. Caught in the rain riding my bike and was offered a ride from someone I didn't know (but know now). Neat.
But you have to learn to slow down. People love to talk and listen. You can wind up talking to anyone you meet for an hour, easily, even if they know you're a yankee, and Texans know. Us yankees are the ones with the accents here.
