MUPD K-9: Working for the Borough Since 1992

The Mount Union Borough Police Department has been fortunate enough to have a K-9 working the streets since 1992. The program was started and developed by Officer Mike Swineford and his first partner, Titus. The program continued with the department’s second four-legged officer, Bear, and is now being operated by Corporal Robert Lippmann and his partner, Saxon.

Saxon is a four year old full blooded German Shepherd who was bred locally in Pennsylvania. Saxon is from the same “family” as the department’s previous dog, Bear. Saxon is currently in training to be used as a cross-trained Patrol K-9 who will serve the department by finding drugs and apprehending criminals.

By far, Saxon’s best attribute is his great nose. He is excellent in detecting drugs in vehicles and buildings. There aren’t many places that drugs can be hidden that Saxon won’t find them.

Funding:

At present, all expenses for the Mount Union Police Department’s K-9 Unit are paid for by the individual handler, in this case Corporal Lippmann. One of the major problems facing the Unit is that of finances. The individual officer is responsible for all costs associated with the care, maintenance and training of his partner – including equipment, food, veterinary expenses, and training and certification costs.

These expenses can become tremendous, reaching well into the thousands of dollars each year.

The Mount Union Police Department K-9 Unit does accept donations for the purpose of training and caring for our dogs. Your donation is tax deductible.

Donations should be made payable to: Mount Union Borough K-9 Fund and sent to: Mount Union Borough; PO Box 90; Mount Union, PA 17066

Training:

The K-9 Team currently trains approximately 4 to 7 hours per week during regular shifts and meets twice a month with other teams from across Pennsylvania for formal training and certification purposes.

Saxon lives with Corporal Lippmann and commutes to work with him each day. They are both members of the Huntingdon County Drug Task Force and can be called upon at any time to assist the Task Force in searching for drugs throughout Huntingdon County.
