March 2007 MEMBER AUTHOR SHOWCASE Bad
Call Randall liked taking the late train home. It meant he got an entire car to himself as the train's gentle rocking motion lulled away the day's stress. A much-needed nap was interrupted by the chirp of his new cell phone. Photo received, the display informed him. Photo? He'd just acquired the gadget the day before, and it had at least a dozen features he hadn't even figured out yet. Who could be sending him pictures already? Randall pressed a button, loading an image that unnerved him into full consciousness. An unknown man stared at him with pleading eyes...and a duct-taped mouth. "What's this?" Randall always talked to himself when he was nervous. "A wrong number? Sick prank?" That, he reasoned, or a pervert trying to thrill his girlfriend. Yeah, that was probably it. He was hitting various buttons in an effort to delete the image when the phone chimed again. Photo received. "This jerk won't quit." Annoyed, Randall hit "Display"--and his stomach lurched. The stranger's throat was a gaping maw, pleading eyes now quite dead. Panic crashed over him in waves as Randall fought to still shaking hands long enough to send a text reply. CALLING 911...THEY WILL TRACE U. Another photo interrupted him halfway into dialing police. Stammering out a curse, he pulled up the image. It was a close-up…of the back of his own head.
