09/20/04 Note: We are currently working with members of the South
Carolina Relic Room and a group of fellow reenactor vendors and researchers in an effort to provide as close to an exact duplicate
to the Lyons jacket of this type issue as possible. This includes not just patterning and construction but actual duplication
of material as well. While currently a work-in-progress we hope to offer more info on this project very soon.
The pictured reproduction Atlanta Depot Jacket is made from a custom pattern using Tart, Brantley & Benjamin #3F
Smoke on Natural jeans cloth with FHW nankeen lining. One interior pocket. Wooden dish 2-hole buttons.
Left front of collar lines up with left front edge of jacket. Dip (or point) at jacket back. Better material than
surviving originals (the remaining few of which date from 1864 and are maded of "...a salt and pepper burlap type of material"),
but a good representative period jacket that has not found the favor at reenactments that RD and Columbus depot jackets have.
Machine stitched hidden seams. Hand sewn visible seams and buttonholes.
This jacket type is generally associated with Western theater troops, but undoubtably saw some service in the Eastern
theater as well. Records indicate that the Atlanta Depot was functioning as early as fall of 1862, and took over production
from the Nashville Depot, which was captured in the spring of that year. During 1863 records indicate that the Atlanta
Depot produced upwards of 130,000 uniforms per year. The overall cut of these garments bears a striking resemblance
to those produced by the Charleston Depot (see L. Jensen's study on CS Jackets for more detail).
We offer a quality reproduction of the Atlanta Depot Jacket at a starting price of $145.00 plus $6.50 shipping.
