The following images represent some of the various types of reproduction Richmond Depot Jackets available.
Three basic styles of Richmond Depot issue jackets based on categorized surviving examples:
Type 1 is characterized by distinctive trim, in this case black tape on collar, shoulder straps and cuffs.
Nine generic 'I' button front with belt loops on sides and button sewn down shoulder straps. There are no known surviving
original RD Type 1 jackets for comparison. Photographs and art work from the period are all that remains as evidence.
This type of jacket was issued from the start of hostilities until sometime during 1862 when it was gradually replaced by
the Type 2 jacket.
Type 2 is essentially the same basic jacket as Type 1 with the tape or piping trim omitted. Shoulder straps and
belt loops remain. Most Type 2 jackets were made of jeans cloth or, apparently rarely, flannel weight or
Kersey wool. Type 2 jackets were in production from early 1862 until probably 1864, when the Type 3 jacket came into
production.
Type 3 is different in that the belt loops and shoulder straps are omitted. Surviving examples of the Type 3 jackets
are all made of cadet gray kersey or broadcloth. This reflects cloth imported from England through the Union blockade.
Jackets of this type were late war production dating from 1864 to 1865.

A closer view of a reproduction Type 1 jacket as would have been used during the early part of the conflict (probably
1861-62). This example is made from Tart, Benjamin and Brantley #5 jeans cloth (naturally dyed) material with black
mohair tape trim on collar, straps and cuff (piping was also used). The color of this jacket will fade to a dirty khaki
color with exposure to sun and the elements. Interior of this jacket is modern osnaberg body and sleeves. Nine
button Waterbury 'I' button front. As always, visible seams sewn entirely by hand. Those hidden from view machine
sewn.

This jacket is made from County Cloth #9 jeans cloth. This is almost too nice to get dirty. Nine button front,
straps, belt loops, inside pocket and stitching as previously described for other jackets.
