The following images represent reproduction frock coats of northern and southern forces. Frocks were used throughout
the war but were probably more evident during the early years as later on cloth became scarce. Early militia units
from the south often were outfitted with standard U.S. Army type blue frocks, causing some confusion during the opening
battles when it was difficult to determine friend from foe based on appearance.
Union frocks are standard dark blue issue with nine button front and functional buttoned cuff with two buttons on each
sleeve.
Confederate frocks are made of either jeans cloth or wool (broadcloth, kersey, etc). Examples shown are jeans cloth.
Both have rear pockets and are lined in cotton print, osnaberg or nankeen. Interior of chest is padded with wool batting
and quilted per original samples (we only recently found a source for wool batting. Previously we were using cotton as
a substitute). Fronts are secured with seven to nine buttons. Four buttons are placed on the rear of the
coat: two on the rear skirt pocket scallops and two above the pockets at the body to skirt junction. As
with all of our garments the hidden seams are machine stitched and all visible stitching including buttonholes and topstitching
is done by hand.
Frock coats are the single most difficult, time consuming garments to
make accurately as they are a rather fitted garment that has a great many individual parts. They also test the tailors
skills and ability to deal with stress. As these are a personal type garment few, if any, will be offered as 'in-stock,
ready to sell' due mainly to the fact that a wealth of personal measurements are required in order to produce an accurate
garment. Pricing of each will be based on material used for body and lining as well as size, cut, 'extras' etc.
As of this writing the base price for C.S. frocks made of jeans cloth, osnaberg
body lining and nankeen sleeve lining, polished cotton skirt pockets and all buttons will be $395.00 plus $6.50 shipping.
Any special requests should be discussed at time of order and the price negotiated accordingly. Turnaround
time on frock coats can be extensive depending on current work load (mine). Please allow as much advance notice as possible
when ordering. These are not a 'get it next week' item.

Examples of three reproduction frock coats. The upper left being a frock of a Union infantry
1st Sgt. (as evident by the blue branch of service trim and chevrons designating infantry). This coat is made
of dark blue wool, has 9 buttons and two rear pockets.
The remaining two frocks are reproduction homespun Confederate coats, generic in nature.
The middle coat has a checked print body lining with nankeen lined sleeves. Eight Alabama Volunteer Corps
(A.V.C.) repro buttons secure the front with four more in the back at top and scallops of pockets. The right most frock
has a nine button front with U.S.eagle general service buttons (four on the rear as above). The collar is of indigo
dyed kersey. All lining on this coat is modern osnaberg.
On all of these coats all visible stitching has been done by hand with unseen seams sewn by
machine.
