The C.S. Sack coats pictured are representative of homespun, private purchase or 'commutation' type garments. This
style of coat was popular during the era and was referred to as a sack (or saque), French walking coat, lounge coat, Chesterfield
and others. These were generally quite baggy in their fit and are seen more often than not made of a finer grade of
material and tailoring than issue garments. Homespun versions looked homespun (more or less depending on the talents
of the maker).
The interior/unseen seams of these coats are machine sewn with all visible stitching
sewn by hand (and there is a lot of hand sewing that goes into one of these coats).
Pricing of these garments starts at $165.00 + $6.50 flat rate shipping for a basic, untrimmed
coat made of jeans cloth material. Prices for coats made of finer grade material or with trim, special lining, etc.
will be determined at time of order.
A C.S. four button coat made from a County Cloth, Inc. pattern is also available. This coat is similar to the cpl.
Thos. Vaden Brooke garment illustrated in EOG and located at the MOC, Richmond, VA. This coat was issued in the summer
of '64 and worn by Brooke, 3rd Co. Richmond Howitzers until the surrender at Appomattox. The original had a 'butternut'
twill jean body with osnaberg lining and a pieced, black cotton twill collar.
Price for this 4-button coat is $165.00 + $6.50 flat shipping charge.
