Around 7:00 pm EST on October 30, 2003, we had a brilliant auroral display here in Virginia. I managed to snap a few pictures of it with my digital camera. This was only the second aurora I've ever seen, and the first I'm managed to photograph.
The aurora started as a pale red glow in the northeastern sky which quickly brightened and grew taller, reaching up to 40 or 50 degrees from the horizon. As it brightened, it gradually moved around to the north, where it faded away after 20 minutes or so.
