I enlisted in the navy while still in high school in Dunedin Florida. After graduation I went to boot camp in Orlando. NOT the smartest thing to do. It was 100 plus F' in the shade that summer.
After boot camp I went to Pensacola, Florida and received technical training. The picture above is my class photo from the basic course. My training there lasted about a year and as you can see it was a combined service environment. I'm in the next to top row 2nd from the right. The marine in the center actually did have a sense of humor. The air force girl on the left is a master sergeant now....
The image above is not long after arriving at my first posting. Never did get the neckerchief thing right....
This picture I call baby chiefs. Everyone in it either went on to great success or failure. All of them except one eventually made chief petty officer. Two of them are officers now. One of them was killed by a drunk driver and had a barracks named after him. By the way the photo was taken on board the USS Constellation (one of the original six frigates). I wasn't in the picture because I didn't have the "proper" uniform on.....
