Ø All dollar amounts are in millions. Ø The Summary worksheet o This worksheet is the one that will be shown when you open the spreadsheet o Purpose: It displays the contract/cap status of every current Giants player in each year from 2006 to 2011 in a table. Also, it allows users to see the estimated cost and cap impact of releasing each player in any year from 2006 to 2011. Further, it contains a list of the Giants 2006 Free Agents. o In a given year, if a player is: § Under contract, a “-“ appears § Scheduled to be a restricted free agent, “RFA” appears § Scheduled to be an exclusive-rights free agent, “EFA” appears o Sorting Feature § Next to the column headers (such as “Pos.”, “End Year” and 2006) you will see arrows. § You can sort the data by using the arrows next to the column headers § Example 1: Sort by Cap Value · By default the worksheet displays the players in order of 2006 cap value, from highest-to-lowest. · Using the sort features, the players can be sorted by 2007 cap value, for instance. · Click the arrow next to 2007 and select “Custom”. From the prompt that appears, select “is greater than” from the drop-down menu and then type in “0” in the box to the right. Then click “Okay”. · Now again click the arrow next to 2007 and select “Sort Descending” from the drop-down menu. Now the cap values of only the players who are currently under contract for 2007 will be shown and they will be shown from highest-to-lowest by 2007 cap value. § Example 2: Sorting by Position · Click the arrow next to “Pos.” and select “CB” from the drop-down menu. Only the contract/cap status of cornerbacks will be shown. · You can further sort by cap value (as shown in Example 1). § Example 3: Sorting by End Year (to determine the team’s free agent) · End Year refers to the last year for which the player is under contract currently. (It does include voidable years, however.) · Click the arrow next to “End Year” and select “2006”. Only those players whose contracts are currently scheduled to expire following the 2006 season will be shown. That is the free agent group for 2006, as it currently stands. · Note that some players may be EFAs or RFAs following their contract expiration, while others will be unrestricted free agents. § How to clear Sorts · If you sorted a column header and want to undo the sort, click the arrow next to the column header and click “All” · Otherwise, simply reload the webpage and the spreadsheet will open to its default status. o Release Feature § Notice the “If Released Pre-June” column. This column allows you to assess the cost and impact of releasing a player in a given year. Releasing a player before June results in different cap consequences than releasing the player after June 1. As a result, the release feature allows you to see the impact of either move. § First, determine which player you want to mock-release. Second, determine whether you want to see the pre-June or post-June implications of releasing the player. If you want to see the effect of releasing the player before June, click the arrow next to that player’s "If Released <6/1 “On Roster” cell. From the drop-down menu, click on the year in which you wish to release the player. § Notice that the player’s cap value for that year will change to his “Release #”. Release # is the amount of cap space the player will take up on that year’s salary cap in the event he is released, his dead money. Please note that in the spreadsheet pre-June releases are assumed to occur prior to the payment of any of that player's LTBE amounts for that year. § Also, the difference between the player’s Cap # and Release # is shown under the Rel. Impact column. A positive Rel. Impact means the Giants are estimated to enjoy a gross cap savings if they release the player before June in the chosen year. A negative Rel. Impact means the Giants are estimated to suffer a gross cap loss if they release the player before June in the chosen year. Note that this a gross amount. The full net effect of a release during the offseason includes the addition of an addition base salary onto the salary cap. As a result, offseason releases often cost an additional $310,000 or so on top of the Rel. #, increasing a negative Rel. Impact or decreasing a positive Rel. Impact. § To look at post-June release information follow the same procedure except click the arrow next to the "If Released >6/1 cell" and select a year. Notice that Rel. #'s will be shown both in the year you released the player and the following year, since post-June releases spread the release cost over two seasons. Also, the Release Impact shown is for the year in which you selected the player be released. Ø Player Search Worksheet o This spreadsheet contains more than one worksheet so that you can look at the Giants cap information in different ways. All the spreadsheet’s worksheets should be listed at the bottom of the Excel screen (there should be four worksheets listed there, three of which you are designed to use). The spreadsheet will open by default to the Summary sheet but you can click on the Player Search sheet near the bottom of the Excel screen to move to it. o Purpose: This worksheet allows you to look at a single player’s estimated cap information in detail. o You will see a cell called: “Select Player’s Name”. To the right of that cell there is an arrow. Click the arrow and select the Giants player you are interested in from the drop-down menu. o Once you click on the player you want, the player’s name, position, and last year under contract will show up under Player Information. o Below that, either the player’s Cap #, including its components, or contract status (-, RFA, EFA) will be shown for each year from 2006 to 2011. The Cap # is broken down into components. Base salary is the money the players are scheduled to receive during the season through their gamechecks. Prorata refers to the amortization of the signings bonuses the player has received. LTBE refers mainly to roster/reporting bonuses the player is scheduled to receive or has received in the given year. They are usually paid during the early part of the offseason. o Both Pre-June and Post-June release information is shown below the player's Cap #. o Finally,
Player Notes is a key section that
shows what bonus amounts (and types) the player is believed to have received as well as the basis for including the bonus in the spreadsheet. Many signing bonuses are attributed to USA Today in the Notes section.
“USAD” refers to USA Today’s Football Salaries
Database. Others are sourced to press reports and specific sites. On the other hand, where estimates and assumptions have been used for bonus amounts, decreasing the quality of the computed values, it is noted under Player Notes. Also, known renegotiations/extension are included
under Player Notes as well. It’s important to look at this section as
the cap values and release information you see is based off the assumptions and
sources cited under Player Notes. Further, known voidable years are listed
under this section and that may indicate that a player’s contract will expire
sooner than the End Year. Ø
2006
Salary Cap Worksheet o The
2006 Salary Cap worksheet provides
the base salary and estimated bonus information, cap value, and release information of each Giants player
in the year 2006. Unlike the Summary
worksheet, it focuses on a single year. o Like
the Summary worksheet, it may be sorted
using the column headers. o The worksheet also includes a list of those released
players who have left significant dead money on the Giants salary cap. o Finally,
the worksheet includes a “Cap Space Remaining” value, the amount of available cap space. This value is simply a calculated guess and should
not be relied on. Please see the Explanation of sources and
accuracy for more details.
