This car was purchased from Rodger Hein of Nine Mile Falls, Washington.
The body has been painted bright red with black fenders and linoleum running boards and floors. The tires are 30 X 3 1/2 Firestones mounted on Model T non-demountable wheels that are also painted red.
There are a few modifications that were made to the car that make it much more driveable than it must have been in 1908. These include an ignition switch controlled by the oiler shut-off valve to prevent starting the car if the
oiler is turned off. This is a nice feature. The carburetor is not the original one from Reo, but a Stromberg side draft replacement. The car runs beautifully and we will most likely leave the new carburetor on it.
The tires should be 28 X 3. When the car was restored in the 1960's 28 X 3 tires were not available, so it was fitted with the larger size. We may leave it as is, but have not made a decision.
The car is a delight to drive and we could not be happier with the purchase.
After attending the 100th anniversary of the Reo Motorcar Company in Lansing Michigan in July, 2004, we believe the correct year of manufacture for this Reo is 1908. We knew it had a 1908 style front axle, but speaking with several Reo club member who obviously knew more about the car than we did, we learned more. It has a 1908 style rear axle (enclosed pumpkin), a 1908 style folding rear seat, and a 1908 style dashboard. Almost all we spoke with believed the car to be a 1908 rather than a 1909 model.
