rats
APOPO
Founder: Bart Weetjens
Established: 1998
Goal: Address the global landmine problem by training "hero
rats" that detect unexploded landmines.
Rats are considerably more efficient and cost effective than traditional demining methods. In 2003, after years of training, APOPO's rats passed their field training tests and began clearing some of Africa's 40 million unexploded landmines.
