John Peterson has been
making
reproductions
of tin and other period sheet metal wares for nearly thirty years. He
employs techniques, tools and machines that were in
use during the nineteenth century. He works in high quality tinplate as
well as brass, copper and sheet steel. Although it is not a full-time
business,
he reproduces wares for museums, collectors and living
historians when his busy schedule allows. |

This japanned lantern features an eisenglass (micah) window. Some collectors refer to this as an "artillery lantern", perhaps because there is no glass window to break and expose the flame to gunpowder. I am not aware of any official designation of this lantern for artillery or ordnance use. Several variations of this style of lantern can be found in Lord's Civil War Collector's Encyclopedia, volume 1. Price: $85.00 if eisenglass is available for window. (candle and tin matchcase are not included) |

MR. SATURDAY NIGHT! Incontrovertible documentary evidence that the 19th century tinman was "the life of the party": Oooooh look!!! He's soldering!!!!!
... it was many a 'prentice to the tinman's trade who looked forward longingly to the day when he, with sharpened snips and heated iron in hand, would be the center of attention from many of the village's prettiest girls ...
Tinman also available for birthdays, weddings and bar mitzvahs ... |
