As I Was In Summer
Remember me as I was in summer
The breeze blowing through my hair
Flowers picked and fields we danced in
Honeysuckle in the mountain air
My brother's wedding, your sister's funeral
Two occasions to shape our world
Independence Day to celebrate your freedom
High school senior to college girl
I'll always remember your candy kisses
Sweet to taste and steal my breath
I never imagined I'd sit here and write
How I never got over your death
Some days I lament things we never did
Foolishly forgetting all we achieved
I get so caught up in those "what if" dreams
That somehow I still believe
You are watching over me sweetly
Much like your heart did in this life
And though I realize often our time is short
I still dream you'd grow up to be my wife
Every year about this time
I bring my poetry to your grave
I know you're listening as I read
And try my best to be brave
The more they say to move beyond this
The more I'm reminded of your love
More innocent than fresh-bloomed flowers
More lasting than the angels above
So take this for what it really is
A tender love promised when we were younger
As the Aids virus wore you down you said
"Remember me as I was in summer"
