"Riding with the devil"

She's in the car
Wishing she were someplace else
His voice rises and falls
Pummeling her spirit, breaking her will;
Another car passes
She dreams of changing places
With that passenger
Who looked so happy and content;
She tries to shut it out
His demeaning insults
Derogatory things not true
His twisted way
Of saying he cares;
She knows she'll forgive him
Though she hates him
At this moment
And the urge comes over her
To shove him out the door;
But it's just a thought
Nothing more than that
Because she truly believes
That she loves him
In the middle of her pain;
She's in the car
Wishing she were someplace else
If only just for a moment
To be free...
