"The Days Of Sara & Tom"
In a little one room schoolhouse
in the valley of yesteryear,
there sits a boy named Tom
admiring a girl who's seated near;
Her name is Sara Pleasance
and pleasant is her sweet smile,
as she looks over her shoulder
flirtatious for awhile.
They pass scribbled little love notes
"Do you love me, check yes or no;
Will you meet me after school
out by Johnson's farm and meadow.
Sometimes the teacher cautions
"okay, you two lovebirds"
and the whole classroom giggles
as if it's the funniest thing they've heard.
From outside, the big bell rings
loud and clear, resounding brass,
as the students let out a cheer
for it's the end of class.
and as the kids run outside
Tom & Sara share a smile,
as they begin their walk home
down the long country mile.
At Pete's Pond they stop for a bit,
across the water they skip stones,
Sara softly touches Tom's hand,
and holds it in her own.
He gives her a little hug
"Would you be my girlfriend?"
she hugs him a little tighter
before they are on their way again.
Cutting through the strawberry patch
they share a berry or two,
innocently feeding each other
like a brand new bride and groom.
he wipes the red juice from her chin
"what a cute sloppy face"
she giggles and kisses him in the cheek
before she runs off for him to chase.
Down dirt roads and across streams
the two youngsters play the game,
"Boy chases girl" some would call it
though it really has no name,
at last they arrive at Johnson's meadow
they both fall into the tall grass
until they're lying close together
as the afternoon begins to pass.
Staring into each other's eyes
suddenly the laughter is gone,
as they realize in all seriousness
this is the place they want to belong.
"can I kiss you", he asks like a gentleman
"yes" she softly breathes
and two pairs of lips come together
as they lay there in the weeds.
So here they are forever captured
young lovers after school and class,
written down in pen and ink
a time that has now flown past
and though it's the thing of memories,
it never truly is gone,
it's right here for the world to see
the sweet days of Sara and Tom.
