"Sometimes in the rain"

Sometimes in the rain it is beautiful
And then again there you are
White flowing skirt and loose black top
Asking me if I have a smoke
It's the only time I wished I smoked
Just so we could make conversation
Without feeling so awkward about talking
Two strangers with nothing in common
But time and displacement from life

The moments in which I've seen you smile
Is all too brief as you pass by
And sometimes I wish you'd just stop
To say something more than "hey"
I wish you'd tell me your favorite book
Or what song speaks to you
Or what you are doing out here alone in the rain
Without the guy I normally see you with

Maybe it's just the loneliness of my spirit
That wishes you'd share some time next to me
No pretensions or no promises
No suggestions of anything more than companionship
On a rainy Tuesday afternoon
I can't help but smile a little to myself
When i see you on these painfully dreary days
And sometimes I just wish you'd tell me your name
Or care enough to inquire of mine

The hour is growing much late I'm afraid
I keep hoping you'll pass by again
On your way to wherever you go
Or just so you can see the poet in residence
Parked on his wooden picnic bench
Writing out missives and verse in his black book
Thinking sometimes in the rain it is beautiful
And then again so are you
