"Watching The City Lights"
Sometimes I sit up here on the mountain
and I watch the evening city lights,
I get caught up in the spectacle
Of my star city late at night;
I try to pick out the house I live in
from all the sparkling color below,
until finally I give up looking
hypnotized by the electric glow.
I see ball fields lit up like Christmas
for Friday night high school games,
tall office buildings reach for the sky,
downtown spots and neon names;
I see the lights from the airport runways,
porch lights on suburban homes,
it's then that it overwhelms me
And I don't feel so alone.
Somewhere in those neighborhoods,
or maybe further than I can see,
there's someone with a heart like mine,
thinking of someone like me;
as I sit up here on the mountain,
and I watch the evening city lights,
I dream someday I'll find her
under the blanket of the lonely night.
