Here John shows the total destruction of the
Great City – We are given a glimpse of those who mourn her passing, because they were sustained by her false securities.
This affected kings, merchants, and those whose trade
was on the seas. They all loved the city for what they could gain from her and
NOT for herself – Normal for the worldly – What’s in it for ME!
Rome was the center of world trade – rich,
extravagant, proud.
v. 9 – Rulers are deeply distressed at her
destruction – because they joined themselves to her for gain and now that yields judgment.
v. 10 – Woe, Woe, to the Great City –
double for emphasis – The rulers distance themselves - so not to get caught
up into her judgment and destruction – there is no escaping. They recognize
the justice in what’s coming (in one hour – quickly).
v. 11 – MERCHANTS – wail and weep –
WHY? No one buys their wares anymore - Selfish to the end. Financial loss motivates their distress.
v. 12 – Even the most precious and desirable
of cargo will no longer be desired for purchase – Material riches have no value in Eternity where God already owns and
has everything. Jewels, clothing, furnishing s, tools – all worthless.
v. 13 – Food, spices, even the souls of humanity
(slaves)- everything is built on man’s souls and dedication (Matt. 16:26)
v. 14 – All the stuff that was desirable, valuable,
sought after – is GONE. It is worthless and will never be found there again.
v. 15-16 – Merchants recognize her demise and
stand away – You’re on your own! Woe, Woe to the Great City –
before they spoke of her might – Now – They speak of her clothing and her wealth.
v. 17 – in one hour - - - The suddenness and
completeness of the destruction is noticeable, BUT they are only concerned with the loss of the wealth. All who make their living from the sea (in various ways) – now join the mourners. Their livelihood has been devastated by the destruction of the city.
v. 18 – They cried out – or – are
crying out – about her destruction!
v. 19 – The sailors are particularly devastated - They throw ash on their heads (Hebrew mourning) – Woe, Woe again – the
third time – in one hour – suddenness – Distress over the loss of profits.
