Lesson 5 - Thy Kingdom Come

“Thy Kingdom Come” – The Petition of Radical Expectancy

The structure:  The invocation – “establishes a Bible-wide understanding of the God we serve.”  The first petition – “Hallowed by Thy Name – asks that God shows the authentic understanding of His essential being to a broken world.”  Now the second petition – “replaces the human understanding of ‘kingdom’ with the divine perspective.”

Jesus’ Understanding of the Kingdom

-          Jesus proclaimed that the Kingdom had come  - the time of waiting is over

-          Jesus testing in the wilderness centered on Kingdom issues - shortcuts

-          Is. 61:1-3 – compassionate ministry – Lk. 4:18-19 – Mt. 11:4-6 John’s disciples

The Nature of the Kingdom

-          When we pray the Lord’s Prayer, what do we expect to happen?

-          Wherever Jesus went, people were transformed.

-          “Kingdom of God” – appears 52 times in the Gospels – it was God’s

-          Jesus was the vehicle of accessibility to the Kingdom of God

-          the kingdom of God is among you (Lk. 17:21)

-          Jesus used: hints, analogies, parables, and imagery to describe the Kingdom

-          Mk. 4:30-32 – mustard seed – small beginnings don’t mean the Kingdome is insignificant

-          Mt. 13: 44-46 – the Kingdom is the highest priority on earth

-          Lk. 14:16-24 – the great banquet – the Kingdom, not for the privileged few

-          Mt. 9:17 – wineskins – Kingdom is so powerful it will no longer fit into the old patterns.

-          Mk. 4:2-9 – the sower – magnificent victories in the Kingdom world

Kingdom Expectations

-          a prayer of great expectancy

-          G.C. Berkouwer – “The prayer ‘thy kingdom come’ is no stammering monologue, but a prayer that expects an answer.  And every time we pray the Lord’s Prayer there is reason to go and stand at the window of expectation.”

-          What do you expect to happen?  What clues do you look for?

Implications for Spiritual Formation

-          expectantly request that God’s kingdom plans be brought to fruition

-          a shift away from the personal and selfish, toward God’s grand design

-          smash our own kingdoms

Principle 9:     “Spiritual Formation Is Building the Word of God

into the Fibers of Our Being”

The Transforming Power of the Kingdom:

-          we are changed because the boundaries have been changed

-          Gal. 3:28 – replaced by the redemptive boundaries of the Kingdom

-          A powerful shaping influence grows out of these new relationships.

The Enabling Power of Praying for the Kingdom:

-          When we anticipate the Kingdom, we find a new zest to life.

-          Develop “Kingdom Eyes” – see the slightest signs as God’s plan

-          A normal thing for those who pray for the Kingdom and expect it’s appearing

-          1 Kings 18:44

Blessings of: salvation, divine guidance, a stabilizing relationship with God, and the radical optimism of grace.

“The perspectives of Kingdom people are totally changed.”

We can face the terrors of the end time with a new long-range perspective – not overwhelmed

Evil does NOT have the last word – free from fatalism

“God can use life’s crushing experiences to shape us into redemptive vessels He can use.”

We offer our Kingdom-enabled energies to others – we can see the Kingdom potential in the most disreputable people.

“We recognize that living contrary to the values and preferences and patterns of this world will bring us into conflict with the powers that control it.”

“We follow One who turned a cross into a plus sign.”

Each day we pray that the Kingdom will break through, and we expect new evidences that the Kingdom is indeed coming.

“Thy Kingdom Come”    Rev. 22:20 – “Amen, Come, Lord Jesus!”

Prayer Principle:  “Citizens of the present kingdom of grace, in anticipation of the future kingdom of glory, are to petition God to act in power and love to bring about His judgments, salvation, and rulership in His creation and thus realize the purpose for the world (His will) He intended when He created it.”            - Wayland Stephens

Scripture taken from The Holy Bible – NIV, Zondervan Publishing Co.

Mark 1:14-15

14 After John was put in prison, Jesus went into Galilee, proclaiming the good news of God. 15 "The time has come," he said. "The kingdom of God is near. Repent and believe the good news!"

Matt 4:8-10

8 Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their splendor. 9 "All this I will give you," he said, "if you will bow down and worship me."

10 Jesus said to him, "Away from me, Satan! For it is written: 'Worship the Lord your God, and serve him only.'"

Isa 61:1-3

The Spirit of the Sovereign LORD is on me, because the LORD has anointed me

to preach good news to the poor. He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted,

to proclaim freedom for the captives and release from darkness for the prisoners,

2 to proclaim the year of the LORD's favor and the day of vengeance of our God,

to comfort all who mourn,

3 and provide for those who grieve in Zion-- to bestow on them a crown of beauty instead of ashes, the oil of gladness instead of mourning, and a garment of praise instead of a spirit of despair.  They will be called oaks of righteousness, a planting of the LORD for the display of his splendor.

Luke 4:18-19

18 "The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to preach good news to the poor.  He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to release the oppressed, 19 to proclaim the year of the Lord's favor."

Matt 11:4-6

4 Jesus replied, "Go back and report to John what you hear and see: 5 The blind receive sight, the lame walk, those who have leprosy are cured, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the good news is preached to the poor. 6 Blessed is the man who does not fall away on account of me."

Luke 17:20-21

20 Once, having been asked by the Pharisees when the kingdom of God would come, Jesus replied, "The kingdom of God does not come with your careful observation, 21 nor will people say, 'Here it is,' or 'There it is,' because the kingdom of God is within you."

Mark 4:30-32

30 Again he said, "What shall we say the kingdom of God is like, or what parable shall we use to describe it? 31 It is like a mustard seed, which is the smallest seed you plant in the ground. 32 Yet when planted, it grows and becomes the largest of all garden plants, with such big branches that the birds of the air can perch in its shade."

Matt 13:44-46

44 "The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field. When a man found it, he hid it again, and then in his joy went and sold all he had and bought that field.

45 "Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant looking for fine pearls. 46 When he found one of great value, he went away and sold everything he had and bought it.

Luke 14:16-24

16 Jesus replied: "A certain man was preparing a great banquet and invited many guests. 17 At the time of the banquet he sent his servant to tell those who had been invited, 'Come, for everything is now ready.'

18 "But they all alike began to make excuses. The first said, 'I have just bought a field, and I must go and see it. Please excuse me.'

19 "Another said, 'I have just bought five yoke of oxen, and I'm on my way to try them out. Please excuse me.'

20 "Still another said, 'I just got married, so I can't come.'

21 "The servant came back and reported this to his master. Then the owner of the house became angry and ordered his servant, 'Go out quickly into the streets and alleys of the town and bring in the poor, the crippled, the blind and the lame.'

22 "'Sir,' the servant said, 'what you ordered has been done, but there is still room.'

23 "Then the master told his servant, 'Go out to the roads and country lanes and make them come in, so that my house will be full. 24 I tell you, not one of those men who were invited will get a taste of my banquet.'"

Matt 9:17

Neither do men pour new wine into old wineskins. If they do, the skins will burst, the wine will run out and the wineskins will be ruined. No, they pour new wine into new wineskins, and both are preserved."

Mark 4:2-9

2 He taught them many things by parables, and in his teaching said: 3 "Listen! A farmer went out to sow his seed. 4 As he was scattering the seed, some fell along the path, and the birds came and ate it up. 5 Some fell on rocky places, where it did not have much soil. It sprang up quickly, because the soil was shallow. 6 But when the sun came up, the plants were scorched, and they withered because they had no root. 7 Other seed fell among thorns, which grew up and choked the plants, so that they did not bear grain. 8 Still other seed fell on good soil. It came up, grew and produced a crop, multiplying thirty, sixty, or even a hundred times."

9 Then Jesus said, "He who has ears to hear, let him hear."

Luke 12:31-34

31 But seek his kingdom, and these things will be given to you as well.

32 "Do not be afraid, little flock, for your Father has been pleased to give you the kingdom. 33 Sell your possessions and give to the poor. Provide purses for yourselves that will not wear out, a treasure in heaven that will not be exhausted, where no thief comes near and no moth destroys. 34 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

Gal 3:28

There is neither Jew nor Greek, slave nor free, male nor female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus.

1 Kings 18:44

The seventh time the servant reported, "A cloud as small as a man's hand is rising from the sea."

So Elijah said, "Go and tell Ahab, 'Hitch up your chariot and go down before the rain stops you.'"
