Jude 16: “These men” refers to the apostates just mentioned in vs.
14-15. They will receive the judgment of apostates as per the prophecy of Enoch. They are “grumblers” – who discontentedly complain against God and
His ways. “They follow their own evil desires” shows they have no
spiritual foundation in their souls and are unstable. They seek immediate gratification
of their lusts (approval, wealth, and power as previously discussed). They speak
and communicate their own arrogant ideas as an attempt to lure others into pride by catering to personalities. Their arrogance leads to their lust for the profit of approval, money, and power, which are their gods.
Jude 17:
Here Jude gives the defense against these apostates and their false teachings. He
refers to the defense against apostasy as stated by Paul in Col. 1:9. By being
filled with the knowledge and Word of God we will know His will and act in faith and strength against such false teachings,
recognizing it for what it is. This doctrinal knowledge must be learned under
the ministry of the filling of the Holy Spirit. He commands them to call to remembrance
and to implement the doctrines of the previous apostles under the ministry of the Holy Spirit.
Jude 18:
The apostles did predict scoffers would come – those who deride spiritual authority and endorse anarchy. The term “last times” could refer to either or both of two periods in history, the Great Tribulation
Period or a low time of heavy apostasy during the Church Age. It is not clear
which is meant, however, we may just take it as any period of apostasy or false doctrines.
Whether believer or unbeliever apostate, they seek only self-satisfaction through the lusts of approval, money, and
power. The believer/apostate avoids the filling of the Holy Spirit and the unbeliever/apostate
rejects the truth of salvation through Jesus Christ.
Jude 19: “These men” are the
same apostates. “Who divide you” - refers to the fact that they
are troublemakers who cause divisions among the saints. They are governed by
the old sin nature. They were unbelievers who had rejected Jesus Christ and salvation
and therefore spiritually dead or lacking spirit (dichotomous) as opposed to trichotomous (believers). They were unable to comprehend spiritual information (1 Cor. 2:14 and James 3:15) (soulish, sensuous, natural
man).
Jude 20:
Jude is still writing about the defense against apostasy. “Dear friends”
or “beloved” saints - must build themselves up or give constant increase in Christian knowledge. One of the best defenses against apostasy is spiritual advancement (Eph. 2:20 and Acts 20:32). This is accomplished through their “most holy faith,” which is the Christian doctrine that
can separate them unto God. It is necessary to pray in the Spirit which requires
the filling of the Spirit and a standing on 1 John 1:9.
Jude 21:
“Keep yourselves” or “wait” with eager anticipation of eternal life for our Lord. This same anticipation is used in waiting for the Rapture (Titus 2:13).
Jude 22:
“Be merciful” is in question in later dependable manuscripts. Another
meaning of this verse is to refute those who argue against your belief. The intent
here is to take aggressive action when faced with argumentative apostates and to attempt to convince them of the true doctrines
of God.
Jude 23: Some of the unbeliever/apostates will
respond to the gospel and to the truth. To others show mercy – indicates
the approach we should take with believer/apostates by showing them the truth too. “Hating
the clothing” – here is a critical attitude. We need to love the
sinner but hate the sin. We need to be careful not to hate the sinner because
of the sin. The old sin nature causes apostasy.
We should still show love and the truth to the apostate – this is the only hope for salvation.
Jude 24–25: "To him (God the Father) who is able (omnipotent) to keep you from
falling (eternal security) and to present (to establish) you before his glorious presence without fault (blameless because
of the work of Christ on the Cross) and with great joy (the extreme joy that the saints will experience in heaven alone) to
the only (the unique Person/the God-Man) God our Savior (Jesus Christ) be glory (preeminence at the right hand of God the
Father), majesty (greatness), power (ruling power) and authority (ruling authority, the right to rule under primogeniture),
through Jesus Christ our Lord*, before all ages (from eternity past), now (the present) and forevermore (the future)! Amen
(I acknowledge it, I concede it).
Concerning Jude 1:25, A.T. Robertson
wrote, "as complete a statement of eternity as can be made in human language."
"God is spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in Spirit and truth." (John 4:24)
"And no wonder, for even Satan disguises himself as an angel of light. Therefore it is not surprising if his servants
also disguise themselves as servants of righteousness; whose end shall be according to their deeds." (II Corinthians 11:14,15)
