Mission
Our purpose as a parent cooperative School is to provide an enriching educational environment for young children and their parents, one that fosters a love of learning, awareness of self and others, and a sense of accomplishment built on a child's natural curiosity. We incorporate the knowledge and skills of parents and staff to create a child-centered environment within the multi - cultural and intergenerational Greenbelt community.

What is a Cooperative?
A cooperative is an organization in which members pool their resources for mutual benefit. Greenbelt Nursery School is rooted in a belief in the cooperative way of doing things.

Founded in 1942, we are one of the oldest cooperatives in Greenbelt. We are incorporated as a nonprofit organization and are recognized as such by the Internal Revenue Service.

When a family enrolls a child at Greenbelt Nursery School, the parents become members of the cooperative. Parents participate in every part of the School's operation: governance, finance, administration, assisting in classrooms, publicity, fundraising, maintenance, and housekeeping. They do this by accepting specific tasks and by serving on committees or on the Board of Directors.

The volunteer work of members enables our School to provide high-quality early childhood education at modest cost.

Objectives
  • To create an environment where children are given opportunities to learn and develop through exploration and play.


  • To foster children's cognitive, physical, social, and emotional development.


  • To support learning in literacy and language development, the arts, math and science within a context of hands-on activities.


  • To encourage appropriate social behavior.


  • To encourage children to make choices, decisions, and compromises.


  • To partner with parents to promote and enhance each child's growth and development.


  • To provide respectful, supportive and caring interactions of staff with children and their families.


  • To foster children's understanding of community and their awareness of cultural differences.


  • To foster their awareness of and concern for nature and the environment.

Our Nursery School and Extended Care programs are carefully planned to be developmentally appropriate. We recognize and cherish each child's stage of development. We listen to each child, and we keep parents informed as we assess each child's growth and development.

Greenbelt Nursery School is accredited by NAEYC's National Academy of Early Childhood Programs. It is one of only a few in the area to have received this distinction.
