TSG Report 8
Fun Game!
The First Fifty-thousand Posts
by 'oscar51'

Dedicated to SexyTech who started the thread
and to hewee who posted the challenge
0
The challenge that motivated me to do this study was posted by Tech Support Guy member "hewee" in the Random Discussion thread "Fun Game!", post #7871:
"This is now the biggest thread for replies. Tell me
just what you have all learned from this thread."
OK, hewee, I'll do that. Here are ten things I have learned from this thread.
1
50,000 of any thing is a lot of that thing.
To collect the data used in this report, I downloaded the first 50,000 posts in Fun Game! This download exercise generated about 212Mb of html files on my computer's hard disk. These files were then filtered to extract for each post (1) the member name of the person who submitted the post, (2) the date and time of the post, (3) the post number relative to the first post in the thread, and (4) the words in the post relevant to the purpose of the thread. This filtering exercise resulted in a 2.8Mb text file with 50,000 lines, one line per post, that contained the input data used to calculate and tabulate the information reported below.
2
To be able to make any sense out of the information in this report,
the reader must know something about the purpose of Fun Game!
To state the obvious, the thread Fun Game! is a game where any TSG member who wishes to participate is invited to submit a two-word post according to the following rules: (1) The first word in the post must be the same as, or closely related to, the second word in the previous post. (2) The second word in the current post can then be any word related to the first word. (3) There must be no implied word(s) between these two words -- although this rule was frequently ignored. The "goal" of the game is to enjoy a meandering trip through the grammatical and syntactical idiosyncrasies of the English language with no specific end goal in mind -- a very typical "goal-less" thing to do in our "post-modern" reconstructive world of feelings. (If that sounds to you like double-think, perhaps your name is Winston....)
3
After spending some time looking through the first 50,000 posts,
I believe that the "goal" of the game has been accomplished.
To support that statement, and to edify those of you who might not have looked at this thread, here are some typical sequences that illustrate the progress of the game. Each line in the following examples gives the name of the member who submitted the post, the post number, and the two-word text or "word pair" that was submitted with the post. We'll start simply.
hewee 4002 hold me
Pat C 4003 me alone
JewisHeritage 4004 alone again
angelize56 4005 again why
hewee 4006 why me
Pat C 4007 me again
angelize56 4008 again too
pyritechips 4009 too soon
Pat C 4010 soon as
Get the idea? The next sequence is a bit more sophisticated and contains two minor breaks in the flow. I'll have more to say later about breaks in the game.
combsdon 10762 point man
Tuppence2 10763 man monday
hewee 10764 monday morning
Tuppence2 10765 morning blues
john1 10766 Blues quartet
Tuppence2 10767 quartet modulates
littlemar 10768 modulating sonnets
tantap 10769 sonnets Shakespearean
SexyTech 10770 Shakespearean Festival
Prrebel 10771 Shakespearean tragedy
Prrebel 10772 Festival atmosphere
tantap 10773 atmosphere stratosphere
Tuppence2 10774 stratospheric winds
littlemar 10775 winds swirling
Tuppence2 10776 swirling vortex
tantap 10777 swirling upwards
littlemar 10778 upward draft
And the next sequence enlightens us semi-literate Americans on some earthy UK vocabulary. The comments in parenthesis are by the member who submitted the post.
hewee 12240 watch game
tantap 12241 game rules
Tuppence2 12242 rules stink
hewee 12243 stink poo
Tuppence2 12244 poo pongs
pvc9 12245 pongs what (Couldn't figure that out)
tantap 12246 what are
pvc9 12247 are ok (Better now)
tantap 12248 ok right (Any idea how hard that is)
pvc9 12249 right again (That was a very very hard one)
Tuppence2 12250 again they
Tuppence2 12251 they reek (Pong means to smell in the UK)
pvc9 12252 reek where (OK thats better)
Tuppence2 12253 reek Scottish-speak
pvc9 12254 Scottish what (But I thought reek = smoke or fumes)
Tuppence2 12255 what nonsense (Reek is a good old Scottish word for a
foul atmosphere, so hence Scottish-speak for smelly)
Thanks, T2; nice to now that. But we Americans are no slouches when it comes to goofy-speak. Consider the following sequence:
hewee 17101 daddys home
SyscoKid 17102 home field
Tuppence2 17103 field vole
angelize56 17104 vole ofit
Tuppence2 17105 (Is that a foreign language)
angelize56 17106 (Pronounce it out - vole ofit - full of it - hee hee)
Groan....
The game has several romantic sequences. Here is one of the more subdued exchanges. If you want to read some of the juicier ones, you'll have to find them yourself; I won't tell you where they are. Member names have been omitted to preserve tranquility. The comment in square brackets was inserted here by me.
he 33049 spoken softly
she 33050 softly smiled

she 33065 tense talking
he 33066 talking softly
she 33067 softly whispers
he 33068 whispers in
she 33069 in secret
Whatever.... These are enough examples to give you the idea of Fun Game!

The technical challenge -- if it can be called that when doing fluff
like this -- was to design a pattern-recognition scheme that would
automatically pick out the relevant word pair from each post.
If a post contained only two words separated by a space, the pattern-recognition task was simple. But if a post contained a comment or a question in addition to -- or in place of -- a word pair, the task was harder. And even if a post contained only a word pair, the two words might be surrounded or separated by a generous amount of miscellaneous punctuation and various happy faces or other graphics. All of these complications had to be dealt with and the learning curve was sometimes bumpy, but I eventually compiled a collection of patterns that automatically found all but a few hundred of the word pairs. I then had to resolve these doubtful pairs by hand, but that was not as difficult or as time consuming as it might sound.
Note that I do not claim here to have found all the word pairs; but I do claim to have found enough of them to make the numbers reported herein believable. Some of these numbers are, in general, as follows:
Time elapsed to reach 50,000 posts: 10-months 22-days 7-hours 17-minutes
Number of TSG members participating: 277 (<0.5% of >60K)
Participating members who submitted >1000 posts each: 14 (5% of 277)
Number of posts submitted by those 14 members: 36,211 (72% of 50,000)
Participating members who submitted <10 posts each: 152 (55% of 277)
Number of posts submitted by those 152 members: 413 (0.8% of 50,000)
Participating members who submitted only one post: 80 (included in the 152)
Number of posts containing word-pair entries: 47,265 (95% of 50,000)
The other 2735 posts were discussion, chit-chat, and tomfoolery.*
* Probably a good word to describe this whole effort.
5
The top six posters together made 25,579 posts,
slightly more than one-half of the first 50,000 posts.
The following table shows the number of posts made to Fun Game! by the top six posters, the number of these posts that contained a word pair, the number of posts that did not contain a word pair, and the date the member made his/her first post to this thread.

The top six posters used many of the same words -- again and again.
To illustrate the "degree of repetitive word usage", i.e., how many times the same word was used, here are the ten words used most frequently by each of the top six posters. The number to the left of each word is the number of times the member used that word in a post. Notice that several words (e.g., "now") occur in more than one list. Because these are the members who posted most frequently to Fun Game!, this multiple occurrence of the same word in these most-frequently-used-words lists may be due to the fact that these members are responding to each other. Or, maybe, they just think alike.

Some TSG members are not shy about using long words.
For example, here are the twelve longest words that were posted and the member who first used them:
accomplishment (LightningBolt)
alphabetically (littlemar)
coincidentally (angelize56)
malfunctioning (anlore2001)
pseudonymously (deuce)
transportation (SexyTech)
uncontrollable (moonmist)
uncontrollably (TW56)
compassionately (joe2cool)
congratulations (Tuppence2)
retrospectively (Tuppence2)
surreptitiously (barfly)
Note that this list does not include the long pseudo-words from those fun posts like
Needhelpnow getinthechatroomnow (Moby)
hellooooooooooo I'm waiiiiiiiiiiiiitttttiiiiiiiiiiggg!!! (tantap)
ggrrrrrrrrrrrrreat feeeeeeeeeliiiinnnnnnnng (hewee)
Nor does this list include the mother of all word pairs and its reply:
disclosed Hepaticocholangiocholecystenterostomies (rstanley)
Hepaticocholangiocholecystenterostomies performed (Tuppence2)
Note: The posting sequence that includes this exchange is given in the Appendix below (search for 6A).
I think I'm missing that body part; I remember having a really bad gut ache....

The existence of a large group of related items in the TSG data base
will sooner or later cause certain statistical tables to be generated
showing the relevance or irrelevance of those items to daily life.
The following table shows a time-history of the first 50,000 posts to Fun Game! The column labeled "Posts" shows the number of posts made during the indicated month. The column labeled "Total" is the cumulative total number of posts. The column labeled "First" is the number of first-time posters during the indicated month.

Total posts: 50000 101 (Different from 100% due to rounding)
Because of the basic idea behind Fun Game! -- make short, two-word responses to previous posts -- it might be expected that each post would be submitted rather quickly following the previous post. This expectation turned out to be true. The following table shows that 80% of the posts were submitted within ten minutes after the previous post and 97% within one hour. The maximum time between posts, i.e., the longest delay without a reply, was 10 hours, 2 minutes.

Total intervals: 49999 101 (Different from 100% due to rounding)
The first two lines in this table show that 5384 posts were made in the same minute as the previous post and 8659 posts were made in the following minute. Thus 14043, or 28%, of the posts were made within one minute or less of the previous post. Let me elaborate a bit on the implications of this observation.
The value of time associated with each post in the TSG forums is given only to the nearest whole minute. Therefore it is not possible to resolve the time increment between posts to an increment of less than one minute. Normally this limitation creates no problems because the basic nature of a help forum implies that a significant amount of time would elapse between replies while the helpers think about how best to answer a particular question. However, in a thread like Fun Game!, there is usually not much thinking to be done and one of the challenges of the game is to see who can be the first member to reply to the most recent post. This "race to post" causes many of the posts to appear as if they were made simultaneously, i.e., they have the same value of time. As noted above, 5384 or 11% of the posts show this phenomenon. About all that can be deduced from these posts is that the order in which they are displayed on the screen represents the order in which they were added to the TSG data base, a procedure based on a least count on one second, not one minute as might be thought based on displayed time. Because post time to the nearest second is not available on the TSG display, nothing more can be done about this situation.
However, because nothing more can be done does not mean that nothing more can be said. So I'll say a few more things about the Fun Game! posts that show the same times.
9
Every game has its side shows.
Frequently two or three posts with the same first word but a different second word were made within the same minute. Usually when this happened, the game would be paused while the members sorted out among themselves which pair to use to continue the game. Here are some examples. Times are PDT.

Note: I have refrained from commenting on the associations expressed in these posts, but I will say here that a shrink might have some fun making gender-related comments about some of these groupings.
Occasionally two posts with identical word pairs were made within the same minute. This happened 86 times. For example:
mtbird 6:09pm 554 hat rack
princesschic25 6:09pm 555 hat rack
LadyLisa 9:50pm 1699 only you

One time, and one time only, three posts with identical word pairs were made within the same minute. Here is the sequence. Comments in parenthesis are by the members.
pyritechips 9:02pm 28691 wire cutters

combsdon 9:06pm 28698 (yikes, some great minds workin tonite)
Sometimes -- and this was very unexpected by me -- three posts made within the same minute showed a normal progression of the game. For example:
Gibble 8:43am 176 race car
Pat C 8:43am 177 car rally
SexyTech 8:43am 178 rally race
jaks 10:58pm 4604 players choice

anlore2001 7:13pm 40789 rising up
moonmist 7:13pm 40790 up tight
angelize56 7:13pm 40791 tight skirt
The implications of this phenomenon are interesting. For this to happen, the first post would be made, then immediately seen by a second member who would respond with a post that, in turn, would be immediately seen by a third member who would respond with a post, all within the same minute. It is highly unlikely that anyone would have predicted that such a thing could happen, yet it did, multiple times. All I can say is that the members must have been very motivated and very busy clicking their refresh buttons.
Four posts were made within the same minute 86 times. Five posts were made within the same minute nine times. And there were three incidents of six posts made within the same minute. Here are those three groups of six posts. Comments in parenthesis are by the members.
pyritechips 9:38pm 3582 gone nuts
deuce 9:38pm 3583 gone home

SexyTech 11:37pm 10231 tattered Mulder
tantap 11:37pm 10232 tattered bear

Aishdan 11:02pm 15498 notch belt
hewee 11:02pm 15499 in side
Tuppence2 11:02pm 15500 notch wood
These sequences do not show uninterrupted game progressions, but they do demonstrate that the "race to post" was alive and well early in the game. There were no instances of seven or more posts made within the same minute.
And one last thing I learned...
10
This was fun.

TSG Members Who Posted To Fun Game! During The First 50,000 Posts
The following table lists by descending order of number of posts the 277 TSG members who submitted one or more of the first 50,000 posts to Fun Game! The columns from left to right show the member name, the total number of posts the member submitted, the number of those posts that actually contained a word pair, the number of posts that did not contain a word pair, the date the member first posted to Fun Game!, and the ranking of the member in the order he/she made his/her first post. For example, member "hewee" made a total of 7829 posts of which 7370 contained a word pair and 459 did not. His first post was made on July 24, 2002, and he was the 11th member to make a post to this thread. The other lines may be interpreted similarly.
