DEATH OF MR. ABBOTT

After attending school for several years, he learned the printing business with F. A. Hanxcsche & Co., from where (through the influence of his cousin, the editor and proprietor, Rev. Eli H. Reese) he went to work on the Baltimore Methodist Protestant. He continued to work at this office until the Civil War, and the paper, being of the marked Southern type, was obliged to suspend. He was next employed on the Baltimore Sun, where he remained for several years. He was employed here when the assassination of President Lincoln occurred, and was one of the six men retained on the "wait" and called after midnight to set up this important news.

In 1866 he accepted a position on a Baltimore afternoon paper, and in May 1867 he accepted a position on the Maryland Republican during the Constitutional Convention then assembled here. At the close of the convention he was offered and accepted the permanent position as manager of said paper, of which George Colton was the editor and proprietor.
