Authorities believe that the headwaters of the beautiful and unique, spring-fed San Marcos River is the oldest continuously
inhabited spot in this hemisphere. A constant 72 degree water temperature and the year-round flow provide the habitat
for several life forms not found anywhere else in the world. Giant elephant ears along its banks, multitudes of turtles,
a large variety of birds and fish all contribute to the river's reputation for special beauty.
Texas State University and the Texas Department of Parks & Wildlife operate an educational facility at the actual
headwaters of the river in downtown San Marcos, Texas, at Aquarena Springs. They also have Indian artifacts found in
or near the river on display.
The San Marcos River is NOT suitable for "tubers" except in the City Park area where the Lion's Club operates a great
tube rental and shuttle service. Better protected and faster moving canoeists and kayakers of all skill levels can enjoy
relaxing, scenic, and/or chanllenging trips on the rest of the San Marcos every day all year long!
