WP COUNT® can now count documents in Microsoft
Word 2000, XP, 2003, WordPerfect for DOS and WordPerfect
for Windows (up to version 12). WP COUNT® is a
line count utility designed to quickly provide line and word
counts for documents. You can count one document at a time or count an entire
folder of documents. WP COUNT® creates a report that displays the
line count for each document (see example below).

What is a character?
A character is all letters, numbers, symbols, and function keys (including, but not limited to, the space bar, carriage return, underscore, all characters contained within a macro, headers, and footers). You can see these characters in WordPerfect by turning on Reveal Codes.
Why count by characters?
Counting the characters in a document is more consistent and accurate than other counting methods. By using a character count, you get the same count regardless of changes to page formats, margin widths, font sizes, etc. It is also the standard that is supported by the Medical Transcription Industry Alliance (MTIA) and the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA). This industry standard gives you increased confidence in the validity of your line counts.
For example, a 650-character document will be measured as 10 lines (650 divided by 65) formatted with 2 inch margins or formatted with 1 inch margins. The ability to measure a document by counting characters means you do not have to be concerned with the document format.
