Urban Allure

Overheard on my block today:

A: Yeah, that's the great thing about cities!
B: What?
A: You get to see so many different pairs of shoes.

Dignity

I feel a shiver everytime I see the latest wave of car commericals that are promoting their new "employee discount" prices. Sure, these companies and their employees are desperate for sales (the average person obviously doesn't buy/lease more than one car a year,) and would rather choose this route than face possible unemployment. But my God, a little dignity please? Let's not only play up the fact that we are taking a perk away from our workers, let's have those same workers in our commercials reading the lines! It has to be at least a little demoralizing no matter how apathy/cut-throat these employees are. And after GM (or whoever initiated this trend) started running these commercials, nearly every other car company has followed suite. In fact, I've seen about 5 of these commercials while writing this, often in a row. This probably wouldn't be such an issue for me if I didn't personally hold dignity and integrity in such a high regard.

Rerun

So I've been flipping channels after I watch the late night news, and I've bumped into the mega-popular sitcom Will & Grace more than a few times. What fascinates me about it is that it makes no apologies about catering to yuppies, the rich, and the upper class. It's like an extension of the apathy in Seinfeld dressed up as a massage for the rich man's ego. A millionaire can relate to a character who gets into a hissy fit when he can't find his favorite brand of lavender lotion. And while I'm all for the public acceptance of homosexuals, the show plays up the superficial and fastidious stereotypes so much that being gay becomes a thinly veiled masquerade for the frivolous problems of the wealthy.

Curious, not complaining

Sometimes I get curious that I'm a victim of "facism," i.e. being judged by my face. Apparently I have such a cherubic and naive complexion that draws in beggars, con-artists, marketing people, and punks to me, even when I'm surrounded by a crowd of people or friends. This has been happening randomly for a decade now, and I long ago decided to view it as an ongoing experiment rather than being offended.

Blank Start is a journal of random and poignant ruminations. It is written with little audience in mind and few words to spare.
