Sometimes I have to pinch myself! How wonderful to be in the later part of your life and doing exactly what you’ve
always wanted to do. I have always loved pottery, always collected it, and thought
about making it. But with working and raising six kids it was always “someday”. That someday is here and it couldn’t be a more perfect situation.
With two partners and a small quaint
shop, there’s not a lot of pressure. We all have our different strengths
in the running of our shop. Pat and Cindy are computer people and take care of
our brochures, business cards and now web site. I can’t get past solitaire
on the computer but I love gardening. The outside of the shop used to be dirt
and gravel. It’s now grass and beautiful flowers. I try to change it every year. It’s a great draw in
the summer when we’re in full bloom. The locals love it and wait patiently
for our infamous sunflowers.
I try to live by the philosophy in life to “keep it simple” and it’s the same
with my pottery. I love a mug that feels good for that first cup of coffee, or
a nice bowl for some hot soup. I like to make simple functional pottery with
beautiful colors. I experiment with many color combinations. There’s nothing like the thrill of finding a great one.
Charleston is also a pretty simple
little fishing village, one of the last on the west coast. It’s a very
down to earth place with hard working fishermen (and women), gorgeous scenery, beautiful beaches, wonderful restaurants, great
shops and, of course, pottery.
