Here is some technical information on the ongoing digitizing project, for those who need to know the details......

A majority of my file negatives are 4x5 size, black and white.  All negatives are being scanned on a Microtek ScanMaker i900 flatbed/drawer scanner using combined Microtek and Digital Ice software.  Negatives are scanned at 1200 dpi 8 bit grey and are imported into Adobe Photoshop CS3 Extended.  Minimal processing of the negative is done before it is saved as a tiff file with lzw compression.  The negatives are saved as a negative image, while the prints, for which no negative is available, will be saved as a positive image, also as a tiff file.

Most of the map collection is too large to be scanned.  Therefore, it must be photographed in order for it to be digitized.  This is being accomplished using a Canon 10mp digital  SLR camera with a fixed lens and controlled lighting.  Even though work with the maps is in the early stages, the results so far has been very successful.

All of the data for this project is being archived on multiple DVDs, hard disk and flash memory drives.  I learned the hard way that multiple backup media is essential. ( I lost 8 months of work due to a failing hard disk)

I hope to make this data available to everyone via the web at some point.  The details of this are still being worked out.  However, samples will be planted on the Point Pleasant History web site as soon as available.

Please feel free to email me if you have any questions or comments about this project.
