AUGUST 30, 2004 - MORE WORK????
TODAY, WE STARTED TO DISASSEMBLE THE ENGINE THAT
WILL BE PUT INTO THE PINTO BECAUSE OF A FEW REASONS.
ONCE WE REMOVED ALL OF THE BOLTS FROM THE INTAKE MANIFOLD, WE NEEDED TO CONVICE
IT THAT IT NEEEDED TO BE REMOVED. THIS WAS DONE USING A 3 lb. SLEDGE
HAMMER ON THE SIDE TO ALLOW IT TO BREAK THE SEAL. ONCE THE SEAL WAS
BROKEN, THE INTAKE MANIFOLD CAN BE REMOVED.
AS YOU CAN SEE, THIS SHOT SHOWS HOW MUCH OIL AND DIRT HAS COME TO REST IN
THE VALVE TRAIN. OUR CONCERN WAS WITH THE FOURTH SPRING FROM
THE RIGHT. THIS IS THE ONLY ONE THAT IS POLISHED WHILE THE REST HAVE
SIMILAR OIL DEPOSITS AS THE REST OF THE AREAS. THIS WAS CAUSED BY THE
ROCKER BEING OFF CENTERED AND RESTING ON THE METAL RING AND NOT THE CENTER
OF THE SPRING LIKE THE REST OF THEM. WE ARE NOW REMOVING THE CYLINDER
HEADS TO BE CLEANED UP AND ADJUSTED PRIOR TO US PUTING THE ENGINE IN
THE CAR.
FROM THIS VIEW, THE ENGINE DOES NOT LOOK TOO BAD. THERE IS A LITTLE
RESIDUE IN THIS PART OF THE ENGINE BUT NOT TOO BAD. THE FIFTH
SPRING FROM THE LEFT ON THE TOP IS THE ONE THAT HAD THE POLISHED TOP. THIS
IS WHEN WE NOTICED THE PUSH ROD FOR THAT ROCKER WITH THE POLISHED SPRING.
IT DID NOT LOOK QUITE RIGHT.
THE ROD ON THE BOTTOM IS THE ONE FROM THE CYLINDER MENTIONED ABOVE. THE
ONE ON TOP IS HOW IT SHOULD LOOK. OVERALL, IT HAS A 1/4" DEFLECTION
IN THE ROD FROM TOP TO BOTTOM. WE WILL NOW NEED TO DO A LOT MORE WORK
ON THIS ENGINE TO GET IT TO WORK PROPERLY. IF NEED BE, WE DO HAVE ALL
OF THE PARTS WE HAVE PULLED OFF THE ENGINE THAT WE RECOVERED FROM THE SIDE
YARD A WHILE BACK. WE MAY ALSO LOOK AT A SET OF ROLLER ROCKERS
FROM A NEWER MUSTANG AND TRY TO USE THEM INSTEAD. WE WILL SEE.
THERE WILL BE NO UPDATE FOR THE NEXT TWO WEEKS DUE TO ME BEING ON VACATION,
BUT AFTER THAT WE WILL ONLY HAVE 2 WEEKS TO GET A LOT ACCOMPLISHED. WE
WOULD LIKE TO HAVE THE ENGINE AND TRANSMISSION LOCATED IN THE CAR SO WE CAH
HAVE IT TOWED TO THE NEW HOUSE AND PUT EVERYTHING PLACED INTO THE GARAGE.
ALSO, THERE IS A SALE AT PICK A PART THIS WEEKEND AND CHRIS MAY GO
TO GET THE MISSING PARTS FOR THE REAR END.
