SEPTEMBER 19, 2004 - NEW REAR END FOR THE PINTO

Here we have already removed the rear axle in preparation for the new one.

My wife even decided to help mask the rear end off so it could be painted.  We decided to paint it now so it would be one less thing to do later.

Here is a comparison between the rear end we removed and the one we are putting in.  We decided to paint the axle the same color as the engine.  This is racing green for the center and semi-flat black on the rest.  Odds are the car will be too low to see, but we will know it is there.

At this point, we got worried that the person who sold us the axle may have sold us a bad axle.  This is because the one from the right is too long and the one on the left is too short to fit onto the center section.  We then realized that they were on backwards and would switch them when we but the center section on..

Here is the center section on completely.  We have removed all of the brake parts for their replacement.  Also, both axles fit into place with no problems.

Here is a side by side comparison of the 2 axles.  We have realized that the brake lines from the original will work on the new one.  This means that it will be one less thing we will need to buy.

This is the competed axle before we put it on the car.

The new u bolts were too long and hit the tires we were putting on the car.  There was also another section that hit the tire, but it was nothing a 4" grinder could handle.

As you can see, the car now sits lower in the rear end by 2" and the tires and wheels we will be using are on the rear of the car.  We are hoping the front will drop by the same ratio when we install the engine.

This is the other side.  It is clear that the tire goes into the fender.  We did test and found that the whole rear still had more travel  and did not bottom out easily.  This was another concern since the entire drive line is considerably larger than the car was designed for.

Unless a miracle happens and we are able to work on the engine, the next update will be from the new house around the 3rd week in October.
