FEBRUARY 21, 2005 - A VERY LONG DAY
TODAY WE
FINALY HAVE ALL OF THE PARTS TO START BUILDING THE ENGINE. I SPENT THE
FIRST FEW HOURS GETTING THE GARAGE READY
. JUST BEFORE LUNCH WE THOUGHT WE WOULD START ON THE OIL PAN THAT
WE GOT READY MONTHS AGO BY CLEANING AND PAINTING IT. WE HAD COMPARED
THE TWO PANS AND THE SHAPE OF THE PAN WOULD BE OK, BUT WE NEVER TEST FIT IT
ON THE BLOCK.
THE PAN WOULD NOT FIT DOWN OVER THE TRANSMISSION SIDE OF THE CRANKSHAFT
AND WOULD ALSO INTERFERE WITH THE OPERATION OF THE ENGINES CRANKSHAFT.
HERE ARE THE TWO OIL PANS WE HAVE, THE ONE ON THE LEFT
IS THE ONE FROM THE MUSTANG AND THE ONE ON THE RIGHT WAS FROM A 302. WE
PLAN ON CUTTING THE FRONT OFF OF BOTH AND WELD THEM TOGETHER TO MAKE AN OIL
PAN THAT WILL WORK FOR THIS ENGINE. THERE IS STILL ONE MORE ISSUE, BUT
WE CAN TRY TO DEAL WITH THAT ONCE WE PUT IT IN THE CAR.
HERE WE HAVE CUT THE FRONT OFF OF OUR OIL PAN AND WE HAVE ALSO CUT THE BOTTOM
OF THE PAN TO ALLOW IT TO HAVE MORE SPACE AT THE VALVE TRAIN. WE MAY
NEED TO PULL IT BACK OFF IF THERE IS INTERFERANCE BUT WE WILL CHECK THAT NEXT
WEEK PRIOR TO THE INSTALLATION INTO THE CAR.
WE THEN PLACED THE OIL PAN ONTO THE BLOCK TO USE IT FOR THE ALLIGNMENT.
WHILE ON THE BLOCK, WE TACK WELDED THE TWO PIECES IN A FEW PLACES SO
WE COULD MAKE SURE THAT THEY DID NOT MOVE.
WHILE I WORKED ON THE OIL PAN, CHRIS WORKED ON PREPARING
THE ENGINE FOR THE INSTALLATION INCLUDING SCRAPING ALL OF THE SURFACES THAT
WOULD RECEIVE NEW GASKETS.
HERE THE PAN IS MOCKED UP. YOU CAN SEE WHERE THE
WELDS WERE DONE ON THE OTHER SIDE. FROM HERE, I USED A HAMMER TO BEND
THE METAL INTO PLACE AND FINISHED UP THE WELDS. I ALSO CUT STRIPS OFF
THE OLD OIL PAN TO BE USED AS FILLER ON THIS PAN.
HERE I AM FINISHING UP THE WELDING OF THE JOINT TO THE
OIL PANS.
ONCE THE WELDING WAS COMPLETE, I NEEDED TO GRIND THE
WELDS DOWN TO MAKE IT LOOK LIKE THE PAN WAS SUPPOSED TO BE LIKE THAT.
HERE WE CAN SEE CHRIS HAS BEEN BUSY INSTALLING THE HEADS
WHILE I WAS WORKING ON THE OIL PAN
WHILE I INSTALLED THE WATER PUMP AND TIMING COVER, CHRIS
INSTALLED THE ROCKERS TO THE REQUIRED TORQUES.
HERE, CHRIS TORQUES DOWN THE INTAKE PRIOR TO US FLIPPING
THE ENGINE OVER TO INSTALL THE PAN.
HERE IS THE FINAL PRODUCT OF THE PAN. IT LOOKS
UGLY NOW, BUT IS FAIRLY SMOOTH AND SHOULD WORK FOR OUR APPLICATION
HERE IS THE FINAL PRODUCT. THE ENTIRE ENGINE EXCEPT
FOR THE INTAKE AND THE VALVE COVERS HAVE BEEN PAINTED RACING GREEN.
THE VALVE COVERS ARE THE SPECIAL ANODIZED COLOR AND THE INTAKE WILL REMAIN
THE ORIGINAL ALUMINUM. THIS COMBINED WITH THE HEADERS AND OTHER PARTS THAT
WILL BE INSTALLED SHOULD BE GOOD ADDITION TO THE CARS LOOKS FOR THE UPCOMMING
EVENTS.
IN ADDITION TO THE EVENT AT THE END OF MARCH (AND THE REASON THE CAR IS
BEING BUILT) WE HAVE ENTERED INTO A CAR SHOW THAT IS LOCAL TO SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA
AT KNOTTS BERRY FARM ON APRIL 17TH. HERE IS THE LINK TO
