FEBRUARY 27, 2005 - 3 STEPS FORWARD, 2 BACK




STEERING COLUMNS - THE BOTTOM ONE IS THE ONE ON THE CAR AND THE ONE ON THE TOP IS OUT OF A 72 PINTO THAT WE FOUND IN THE JUNK YARD LAST YEAR.  WE WILL MOST LIKELY NEED TO USE THE TOP ONE BECAUSE OF A LACK OF CLEARANCES WITH THE ENGINE.



DRIVESHAFTS - THE BOTTOM ONE IS FROM THE 82 MUSTANG GT AND THE TOP ONE IS FROM THE PINTO.  SUPRISIJNGLY, THEY ARE BOTH THE SAME LENGTH.  WE WILL USE THE DRIVE SHAFT TO GET THE PROPER DISTANCE BETWEEN THE TRANSMISSION AND THE REAR END.



CHRIS IS CUTTING THE FRONT END EVEN WITH THE FRAME SO THE ENGINE WILL FIT IN EASILY AND THE RADIATOR WILL HAVE AS MUCH COLLING AS POSSIBLE.  WE NEED THE FRONT END TO STAY RIGID AND WE WILL INSTALL STRUCTURAL MEMBERS AFTER THE ENGINE IS IN.
 



REBUILT CLUTCH DISC FROM ALL CLUTCH IN SANTA ANNA.  FOR $25, THEY REMOVE THE OLD CLUTCH MATERIAL FROM OUR CLUTCH DISC AND INSTALL NEW "RAYBESTOS" CLUTCH MATERIAL.



FINALLY , WE WERE ACTUALLY ASSEMBLING  THE ENGINE  TO THE TRANSMISSION AND NOT TEARING IT APPART.  



HERE THE ENGINE BAY IS READY TO RECEIVE THE ENGINE.  IT WILL BE TIGHT, BUT IT WILL FIT.



START BY PUTTING THE TRANSMISSION LOWER SO WE CAN GET THE ENGINE INTO ITS PROPER LOCATION.



WOW, THIS IS GOING REAL SMOOTH



WHAT HAPPENED, IT GOT CAUGHT ON SOMTHING




IT FIT THROUGH THE OPENING ON THE FRONT



ALMOST THERE, THERE SHOULD BE ENOUGH ROOM TO HAVE THE CHAIN FROM THE HOIST FIT BETWEEN THE ENGINE AND THE FIREWALL.



THERE ARE A FEW PROBLEMS, HERE THEY ARE
1) THE OIL PAN IS NOT GOING TO FIT AS IT CURRENTLY IS.  THE ORIGINAL BUILD REQUIRES THE USE OF AN OIL PAN FROM A MUSTANG II FROM 74-78.  THIS ALLOWS THE PAN TO CLEAR THE STEERING RACK THAT IS CURRENTLY INTERFERING WITH OUR MODIFIED OIL PAN.  
2) THE BRACKETS FOR THE ENGINE HOIST ARE HITTING THE FIREWALL.  WE WILL NEED TO RELOCATE THEM TO THE CYLINDER HEAD FOR THE NEXT ATTEMPT TO INSTALL THE ENGINE NEXT SATURDAY.  
3) THE MOTOR MOUNTS LOOK LIKE THEY ARE NOT GOING TO REACH THE SIDE WALLS.  I MAY INSTALL 6X6 PLATES BEHIND THE MOTOR MOUNTS FOR ADDITONAL STRENGTH TO THE INSTALL OF THE MOUNTS.  



SINCE THE OIL PAN DID NOT WORK AS WE HAD IT, I DECIDED TO BUILD IT  SIMILAR TO THE MUSTANG II WITH A CHANGE TO THE DESIGN TO FURTHER CLEAR THE STEERING RACK.  



HERE IS THE FINAL MOCK UP OF THE OIL PAN.  IT CLEARS THE COUNTER WEIGHTS FOR THE CRANK AND WILL CLEAR EVERYTHING ONCE FINAL ADJUSTMENTS ARE MADE.  THERE WILL BE A FEW MINOR MODIFICATIONS, BUT IT WILL WORK BETTER THAN OUR ORIGINAL MODIFICATIONS.

IF THE ENGINE IS NOT INSTALLED BY NEXT SUNDAY NIGHT 3/6/05, THERE IS A GOOD CHANCE THAT WE WILL NOT FINISH THE PROJECT.  SOME OF OUR FRIENDS ARE HELPING OUT AND THEY WILL BE BY THIS WEEK TO START ON THE BODY WHILE I WORK ON THE OIL PAN AND THE ELECTRICAL FOR THE DASH.
