- DONE IN TWO
WEEKS???
IT IS HARD TO BELIEVE, BUT THIS PROJECT HAS TO BE DONE IN 2 WEEKS.
I THINK WE CAN DO IT, BUT THERE WILL BE A LOT OF LATE NIGHTS BETWEEN
NOW AND THEN. THE CAR STILL HAS A LONG LIST OF ITEMS THAT NEED TO
BE DONE BUT WE ARE CROSSING THEM OFF DAILY.
NOW, HERE IS THE WORK
WE DID LAST WEEK. WE COULD HAVE DONE MORE THIS WEEK, HOWEVER WE
HAD AN "INCIDEDNT
" THAT CAUSED CHRIS TO GO TO THE HOSPITAL DUE TO AN ANKLE GRINDER,
I MEAN ANGLE GRINDER. NEEDLESS TO SAY, HE NOW HAS 8 STITCHES AND
A LIMP. AFTER THAT, WE HAVE TRIED TO BE A LITTLE MORE CAREFUL WITH
THE GRINDER AND DOUG WILL NOT EVEN TOUCH IT
(CHICKEN)
BECAUSE HE KNOWS THAT HE IS THE NEXT ONE TO BE INJURED SINCE I STARTED THE
FUN WITH THE GRINDER BY NOT USING EYE PROTECTION AND TAKING A PIECE OF
METAL IN THE EYE.
WE STARTED THE WEEK BY TAKING THE CARB APART AND CLEANING IT WITH
A PARTS WASHER I WAS DONATED. FROM THERE, WE LOOSENED UP ALL OF THE PARTS
AND CLEANED THE VARNISH OUT (THE REASON IT WAS IN THE TRASH)
ONCE CLEANED, I SPRAYED EVERYTHING WITH CARB CLEANER TO HELP
RINCE OUT THE PART CLEANER SOLUTION. HERE IS AN EXPLODED VIEW OF
THE CARB PRIOR TO PUTTING IT BACK TOGETHER.
HERE IS THE BOTTOM HALF AFTER I CLEANED IT UP AND PUT IT BACK TOGETHER.
THE ONLY PART STILL TO INSTALL IS THE RODS FOR THE BUTTERFLYS
HERE IS THE TOP HALF WITH THE GASKET AND NEW NEDLES UNDER THE FLOATS.
FROM HERE, I PUT IT BACK TOGETHER AND CONNECTED ALL OF THE LINKAGES.
SOMTHING DIDN'T SEEM RIGHT, SO I WILL TALK TO A FRIEND TOMORROW TO
SEE IF HE CAN HELP ME WITH THE LINKAGES. FROM THERE, WE NEED TO
FIGURE OUT HOW TO MAKE THE THROTLE CABLE WORK WITH THIS CARB.
THIS IS PROOF THAT ADJUSTING THE FIRE WALL WITH THE HAMMER DID DO
SOME DAMAGE. FROM HERE, YOU CAN SEE THAT THE HEATER CORE BOX WAS
CRUSHED AND SHATTERED. FORTUNATELY, THE HEATER CORE WAS NOT DAMAGED
SO WE WILL JUST INSTALL NEW HOSES AND WE WILL MOVE ON.
HERE CHRIS HAS CUT ALL OF THE DAMAGED MATERIAL AWAY AND IS PREPARING
THE BOX FOR A REPAIR IN FIBERGLASS HE HAD LEFT OVER FROM MAKING A SPEAKER
BOX FOR HIS CAR.
THIS IS HIM INSTALLING THE LAST OF THE FIBERGLASS. WE WILL
INSTALL IT LATER THIS WEEK WITH NEW HOSES THAT WILL BE CONNECTED TO THE
ENGINE.
HERE IS THE FUEL CELL BRACKET INSTALLED INTO THE CAR AND READY TO
GO. YOU CAN ALSO SEE THE BATTERY BOX IN FRONT OF IT THAT IS IN THE
PROCESS OF BEING INSTALLED.
WHILE I WAS WORKING ON THE FRONT OF THE CAR, CHRIS WAS WORKING ON
THE INSIDE TO INSTALL THE SHIFTER. EVEN THOUGH THE 79-92 MUSTANG
WAS MODELED AFTER THE PINTO THERE WERE SOME CHANGES TO THE CHASSIS. WE
HAD TO ENLARGE THE HOLE FOR THE TRANSMISSION SHIFTER, HOWEVER THE CLUTCH
LINKAGE, DRIVESHAFT ALL WENT IN WITH LITTLE TO NO MODIFICATIONS
ALL THAT IS LEFT TO INSTALL IS THE SHIFT BOOT AND THAT WILL BE DONE
TOMORROW NIGHT.
I WAS WORKING ON A MONTE CARLO BAR WHILE CHRIS WORKED ON THE INSIDE.
IT IS A BRACE THAT GOES BETWEEN THE FENDERS REPLACING THE FRONT CROSSMEMBER
THAT WE CUT TO PUT THE ENGINE IN. SOME PEOPLE LEAVE IT IN BECAUSE
IT IS THE BEST WAY TO KEEP THE FRONT END FROM MOVING AROUND, BUT WE ALSO
WANTED THE ABILITY TO REMOVE THE ENGINE EASILY WITH OUT DISCONNECTING THE
TRANSMISSION.
AFTER I COMPLETED THE SINGLE BAR, I ADDED DIAGIONAL BRACES TO HELP
REDUCE MOVEMENT FURTHER. HERE I AM USING LARGE MAGNETS MADE FOR PLACING
METAL IN PLACE PRIOR TO WELDING TO HOLD IT INTO PLACE
WHEN COMPLETE, IT SHOULD LOOK LIKE THIS. I ALSO COVERED THE
ENGINE TO PROTECT IT FROM ANY DEBRIS CAUSED BY EITHER WELDING OR CUTTING
AT THE LOCATION.
TACK WELDING THE BARS IN A FEW LOCATIONS TO HOLD THEM IN PLACE FIRMLY
WHILE I COMPLETED WELDING THEM
HERE IS THE COMPLETED BAR. AND, YES THE ENGNE IS OFF CENTER
BY A FEW INCHES. THIS IS TO OFF SET THE WEIGHT OF THE DRIVER. OK,
ITS NOT, BUT IT SOUNDS GOOD. THE MOTOR MOUNTS WE USED WERE OFF A 75
MUSTANG II WITH A V8. IT HAD A LONGER FRAME MOUNT SO THE ENGINE COULD
FIT AROUND THE STEERING BOX.

THE BATTERY BOX WAS FIRST INSTALLED INTO THE OPENING, BUT BECAUSE
OF THE CONTOURS OF THE FLOOR, WE HAD TO FABRICATE A FLAT PANEL FOR THE
BOX TO SIT ONTO. WE WELDED 2 6" WIDE PLATES, SANDED 1 SIDE SMOOTH
AND THEN PAINTED IT TO MATCH OTHER ITEMS BEING PLACED AFTER THE INTERIOR
WAS PAINTED.
THIS WEEK, WE WILL BE RECEIVING EXHAUST MANIFOLDS I WON ON EBAY. THEY
TYPICALLY SELL FOR 100 EACH BUT WE GOT LUCK AND GOT THEM FOR MUCH LESS.
ALSO IF IT FITS OUR BUDGET (GETTING TIGHTER DAILY) WE GOT A NEW RADIATOR
(18.5"X24"). IF IT DOES NOT FIT OUR BUDGET, WE WILL USE THE STOCK
PINTO RADIATOR AND WE WILL FIGURE OUT A WAY TO MAKE IT COOL ENOUGH FOR THE
CAR (OR RUN THE CAR ON A LIMITED BASIS AND HOPE IT STAYS COOL ENOUGH.
