March 25, 2006 - STOP AND THINK...

Last week after we replaced the starter and the car still would not start or run, Chris and I decided to think about it all week.  When we started work on the car  today, we still had no idea why it would not start.  I had ordered some tires for the front of the car since the ones that came on the mustang wheels were too big.  We made a run to drop off the wheels and pick up a new starter and solonid.  When we got home, It hit me that we did not have a main ground wire to the engine block and that could be our problem even though the car up until now has started and run for short periods of time.  So I dug into my old stereo wires and came up with some 4g wire and terminals that would work for the ground to the block.  Once we installed that, it was still not starting but was now turning over.  After a few more minutes, Chris and I checked the fuel tank and with all of the running we had done, we have gone thru the fuel that we put in several months back.  I had a 2 gallon can that we poured into the car and it ran.  Now for progress...

On the Right is the size of tire that came on the mustang wheels on the left.  The Tire on the Left is our new ones.  The size difference is quite large.  The old tire (for use on Drag maybe) was 235/60/15 and is a BFG Radial TA.  The tires we bought today is a Falken Ziex ZE-512  size 225/50/15.

This week, we also received our exhaust wrap to help isolate the heat from the fuel lines.  It will still get hot, but will reduce the chance of fire.  We still need to wrap the Passenger side, but the drive side was the critical one to do.

From the front, you can see the wrapped exhaust on the drivers side and the bare on the passenger side.  This is now the final ride height until we install the mustang springs and further adjust the height.  As of now, any bumps will need to be taken slow.

Here is the side view of the car with the new tires installed.  The car now has a slight rake to the front.  The exhaust  is visible in front of the tire.

If we are to get it running by the show, we need to get the following completed...
  1. Bypass the heater core.  The one that came with the car is leaking and we live in southern california.  We do not need heat
  2. Replace the valve covers with the ones that were given to me last year.  With the use of new gaskets, we should have no more leaks from here.   we just need to hope there are no other major leaks anywhere else.
  3. Install the fans for the radiator.  I have the wires already done in a harness with relays.  I just need to install the switches at the dash.
  4. Install Seat belts, front bumper, side marker lights, weld the alternator bracket for stability
  5. Cut the hood for the new scoop only if time permits.  Otherwise, just drive to the event with out a hood.
If we do not get it running, I will then just go to the show with chris in his car and just have fun.
