First time edition

Welcome to the first appearance of The Julie Times. This is the first time I have done any kind of organized Christmas or holiday season mailing! I hope you like it.

I have had a lot going on in the past year, as you can see, and I promised a lot of people I would write them as soon as I got a job.

Well, the job situation has been complex, as covered in the article opposite, but has finally settled down.

May your days be merry and bright, and may all your Christmases be white!

I'm in love!

A fairly recent development in my life is my relationship with a Morris dancer named Pete Dombrowsky. I met him in May on a Greyhound bus (don't laugh) which was full of Morris dancers returning from the Midwest Morris Ale in Colorado.

Pete lives in Madison, so I didn't see him again until the Labor Day weekend when a few of the Madison Morrisers joined the Minneapolis teams dancing at the Rennaissance Festival. I went down to visit him in October, and the rest is (current) history.

He is moving up to the Twin Cities in January, as we can't stand being 300 miles apart.

Pete has a Masters degree in Math, and has been tutoring and doing odd jobs in Madison. He does not have a job up here yet, but should not have a problem finding a job in Minneapolis.

Pete is 6'5" and very thin, but muscular from all the dancing he/we does/do. He has blond hair and blue eyes and is very attractive (others confirm my admittedly biased opinion).

Pete does Scandinavian and Contra dancing, and I am introducing him to international, which continues to be a major part of my life. We will Morris dance together on a new mixed team in the Twin Cities. He is wonderful!

2 New jobs at U of M

Half-time with Minitex, half with the math library

After more than a year, I finally have a permanent position, albeit half-time, with Minitex, a Minnesota state institution run through the University of Minnesota. I also have a temporary position in the Math Library, which is closely connected to the department I have been working for, the Science and Engineering Library.

I have been working as a reference librarian for Science and Engineering about 25 hours a week on a temporary basis while they searched for a head of the reference department.

They have now filled that position, making my position obsolete, but with the Math Librarian, leaving that position open.

Meanwhile, I had applied for a position with Minitex Reference Services. They interviewed me in late November, and in the first week of December, they offered me a permanent half time position.

Full-time benefits!

The Science and Engineering people have been impressed with me and asked me to work in the Math Library until a Math Librarian is selected.

I told them I could work half-time at the Math Library, and worked out a schedule with Minitex, so that I work three mornings a week at Minitex and two at Math, with afternoons at the alternate library. I will be eating lunch while crossing the Mississippi river every day, as Minitex is on the West Bank and the Math Library is on the East Bank.

If both positions are salaried, the two half-times will officially add up to a full-time, and I will get benefits. The Math position is currently hourly, but they are working to change it to salaried so that I can have benefits.

I may apply for the Math Librarian position. If I do not become the math librarian, I can stay with Minitex and return to another position I have had, substituting for the Minneapolis Public Libraries (sporadic work, but fun).

This will be the first time I have worked a "normal" 40-hour work week! Wish me luck!

I bought my 1st car!

In May, I bought a 1975 robin-egg blue Chevy Nova. I bought it for $500 from the niece of a folk dancer.

It has required a few repairs, but generally runs well, and starts well in the cold.

Unfortunately, I have been warned by mechanics that it is not safe to drive long distances, so my many trips to Madison have been through other means.

In a related note, I have joined the ranks of "real" American adults. I have my first major credit card (Visa) My first charge on it was a car repair!

Other news of 1989

It has been a good year, with lots of dancing and lots of good friends. I am in two international dance groups, two Morris groups (a women's team and the new mixed team) and I am a fool for a rapper sword team called Vorpal Sword. People say I work part-time and dance full time!

In August, my brother Ricky and I moved next door to the house he and my brother Danny own, and Danny and his wife Nancy moved into the house. We run back and forth all the time. Pete will be living four blocks away when he moves up here.
