Travel

Dancing in England

This summer, Julie’s Morris dance team, the Bells of the North, traveled to England to dance with English Morris sides. For the last two weeks in June, Julie visited eight dance teams, and Pete spent some of that time galavanting around fair Albion with some of the other Bells’ male counterparts. Both of us took in cathedrals, ruins, castles, and gardens.

After the dance tour, we did a tour of our own during the first two weeks of July. We visited Oxford together (punting on the Cher), Holy Island (for a windy anniversary), and the stone circles at Avebury and Stonehenge. Driving with a stickshift on the left was not too difficult; dealing with British drivers on high-speed, narrow roads was fun but a little scary.

We also visited Pete’s mom’s cousin Ille & her family in Hannover, Germany. Ille and Wolfgang showed us Hannover, a castle, a beautiful town called Hildesheim, and a lot of very good, very rich food!

Automotive

Used Cars Bought and Sold

After looking at the maintenance and insurance for 2 cars, we decided that one would be enough. Besides, Dijit, the newer of the two, was proving that Consumer Reports was correct in giving a “Poor” rating to the Plymouth Horizon, so we were quite pleased that someone was willing to buy it from us. Unfortunately, Daisy, the Toyota, was also not long for this world, at least not in her current body. Not without some sorrow, we sold her and bought a slightly newer Toyota Corolla Wagon, Rover. Rover makes a few noises (our mechanic tells us they aren’t a problem) but is otherwise satisfactory, and it has very little rust!

School and employment

Hurry Up and Wait

Pete’s major task this fall, besides schoolwork and math tutoring, has been looking at graduate programs in linguistics and filling out applications. Ugh! They are basically done, so now we’re waiting till March or April to find out where we’ll be next fall. Part of what determines where we go will be what prospects there are in each location for library jobs for Julie.

Notes ’n’ quotes

Julie, meanwhile, was quoted in American Libraries (Dec. 1993, p. 983) in an article on Hillary Clinton’s hairstyle. The quote was taken from an electronic mail message Julie sent to a library reference discussion list about a syndicated article that compared Clinton’s old “grad student” look to that of a librarian.
