Since moving here a year-and-a-half ago, we have been able to see both local and touristy attractions. UCSC’s family student housing is on a hill with groves of redwoods and various deciduous trees, a meadow, and a panoramic view of the ocean and Monterey Bay. The front yard is frequented by deer, raccoons, and the occasional possum. We have also seen a fox and may have seen a mountain lion (yikes!) not too far away.
Other attractions include the UCSC Arboretum, the Santa Cruz wharf (complete with sea lions napping on the underlying girders), and Vasilli’s—a Greek restaurant where there is dancing, singing, and deliberate smashing of dishes. Not far is the Monterey Bay Aquarium, which we have heard has just expanded.
We were able to do some traveling to visit friends and family, and we were quite pleased to have friends and family visit us here.
We also had the pleasure of meeting Julia’s mother’s cousin Leona and her husband Claude who live just up the road in Fremont. They have a lot of fascinating family history information, and our visits with them have been most pleasant.
Julia has stepped to bat in the latest venture of Seabright Morris and Sword. After a workshop given by Jim Morrison from Albemarle Morris in Virginia, Julia became the sword fore for the team, coaching them in the Papa Stour and Kirkby Malzeard longsword dances. The dancers hope to make their sword debut at the Morris Ale near L.A. in April.
Julia has also taken on the job of Cotswold fore for the team, and though both jobs are taxing, she is happy to help the team reach toward its goals of doing excellent dancing while having fun. Pete is dancing both Cotswold and sword with the team except when school is too pressing.
For more information on Seabright and morris dancing, visit the Seabright home page at <http://www.ucolick.org/~sla/morris/sms.html>.
On the computing front, Pete not only has a web page (http://ling.ucsc.edu/~schult) [no longer exists - PDS 11/29/2001] but is putting his skills to work for the Linguistics Board of Studies (Santa Cruz-speak for Department of Linguistics ). He will be coordinating communications for a linguistics conference to be held here in the fall.
Julie has been dubbed Software Coordinator for the Adult Services Department and is helping to get their web page up and running. It can be seen at <http://www.lib.berkeley.edu:8000/SNVL/index.html>.
Pete reports progress towards his goal of a publishable qualifying paper. The UCSC PhD program requires 2 publishable papers instead of the qualifying exams of other programs. Pete is using a research seminar this quarter to expand on a paper written last year on the phonology of reduplication in Gothic, Ancient Greek, Sanskrit, and Latin.
In addition to his research, he has gotten some experience as a teaching assistant. Last winter he TAed an introductory course in the UNIX operating system, and this winter he is TAing for a second quarter syntax course.
Julie is pregnant! The expected due date is September 5, so if the baby is born on the due date, s/he will share a birthday with h{er/is} Aunt Nancy. Julie is having morning sickness, but it’s getting better. Otherwise, the doctor tells us everything is going fine. Julie’s even seen the heartbeat on ultrasound!
