JJ growing by leaps and bounds

JJ is now able to crawl anywhere in the apartment and over long distances at the nearby park. She can also stand without assistance or support, though she usually likes to grab a nearby hand or piece of furniture. She has managed to take up to three baby steps without falling down, so we will no doubt have a toddler in the house soon.

We are also quite happy with the way JJ the person is developing. There has been a gradual but steady emergence of personality over the last ten months. She has been able to laugh and smile for quite awhile now, and she does both a lot. She also gives hugs spontaneously, which we both enjoy. She seems to have more of Julie’s extroversion than Pete’s introversion: we have yet to see any signs of stranger anxiety. It is a great pleasure to have her as a daughter and roommate. Now if she could just sleep through the night...

School’s out

Pete achieves Mastery

Pete successfully defended his MA thesis-Suppresion of the marked and emergence of the unmarked: Reduplication in Attic Greek-back in December. The paper was deemed good enough to serve as one of his PhD qualifying papers, but during the course of the Fall Pete and his advisor had come to the conclusion that Pete’s interests were not likely to lead to a PhD thesis. So at the end of the Fall we decided that the best course of action was for Pete to take the MA and look for work in Silicon Valley. Since finishing school in March, he has been working as JJ’s day time caretaker and all-around househusband. He’s also managed to get a few résumés sent out!

Moving: Our new abode

Now that Pete is out of school, we have moved to Sunnyvale to be closer to Julie’s job. The new place is a fourplex, and we’re in the top front. Kind of warm at times but mostly comfortable. It’s ideally located with respect to Julie’s work: the library is only a mile and a half away. Julie has been able to walk and bike to work, and Pete & JJ have been able to stroll down.

Transportation

Our “new” car

In May it became apparent that Red Rover (’81) was moving into her Golden Years, and it wasn’t clear that it would be worth pouring that much gold into her. She had served us well over the previous four years and had just passed the 200,000 mile mark. She has been replaced by Frau Blue Car, another Toyota Corolla Wagon (’90) who is working quite well.

Faces & Places

Malibu, Texas, Half Moon Bay, San Diego, and Mexico

We were able to get to some interesting places and events during the last year and a half. In April 1996 the West Coast Morris Dance Ale (The Duck and Cover) was held in the Los Angeles area. We stayed at a camp in Malibu and danced at parks and a nursing home in LA and Santa Monica. The 1997 ale was right in Santa Cruz, so we didn’t have to travel to get there. However, we did have to work hard as hosts.

In June ’96, Pete went out to Texas to visit his parents and some German relatives. Bernd Küreck — Pete’s second cousin — and his wife Gaby were in Texas also visiting Pete’s parents for a couple of weeks. It was a very enjoyable first meeting.

In July ’96, we spent a romantic weekend in a cottage in the woods near Pescadero to celebrate our 5th anniversary. Then we got a head start on Labor Day when Julie went into labor in the wee hours of September 1. Julie’s mother, Edith, was visiting and was able to run errands and see JJ as a newborn. The other grandparents followed within the next month. Christmas was spent with Julie’s father, step-mother and siblings in San Diego.

For Thanksgiving, Pete’s sister Sarah visited and introduced us to her fiancé, Robert. Between their wedding in April and the wedding of Pete’s brother Tom in February, JJ has added two states (Texas and Arizona) and one country (Mexico) to her travel experience.

During our most recent trip to San Diego early this June, we got to see Candace & Roy and Julie’s cousins Sheryl and Sharon. We went to Sea World where JJ got to see JJ the whale. JJ (the whale) is about 4 months younger than JJ (the human) but goes through a lot more food: 5 gallons of “whale shake” at a feeding.

EXTRA!

Late-breaking news!

Julie will be starting a new pition at the Patent and Trademark Library of the City of Sunnyvale. She’ll start full-time on July 28th. The official name of the library is the Sunnyvale Center for Ides, Innovation, and Invention (SC[I]3).Julie will have no more Sunday or evening work, and she’ll get to do lots of datbase and web stuff!
