Full-time and permanent, but career shift in progress
In February of 2007 Pete was hired as a file clerk at the University Hospital of SUNY Upstate Medical University. He has now been there a year-and-a-half and passed his probationary evaluation. The work is not exciting or mentally stimulating, but it pays well for clerical work, and it has benefits. The not-so-attractive part is that his shift is 4-midnight, so he doesn't get to spend evenings at home with the rest of the family. Breakfast is the family meal (when he can make it out of bed in the middle of his sleep cycle).
Meanwhile, he has started Syracuse University's library school's distance program to study for a master's in library and information science. "I enjoyed working at the Hamilton Public Library, and I like classifying things, so I've decided to become a catalog librarian," he says. The program began in July with a one week residential "boot camp" and goes from there. For now he will continue working at the hospital until he can get a job at a library. He will be taking one course at a time while working full-time. At one course per term and three terms per year he figures he can be done in four years, but he may switch to full-time study some time in the future if he can get a graduate assistantship.
June and Julie at the Boston Arboretum for Lilac Sunday
June has been staying active with school, violin, piano lessons (a new addition), and Girl Scouts. For Girl Scouts she went to three separate weeks of camp last summer and has been earning badges throughout the year. This summer she went to a horseback riding Girl Scout camp and had a lot of fun. She is enjoying reading, especially Manga and graphic novels. June will turn 12 and start 6th grade in September, and will probably reach 5 feet soon!
Julie's first year at the Groton Public Library had the board raving about her, but she encountered a different board for her second year, and relations became chillier. The upshot was that they let Julie go at the end of February. Since then she has been looking for both library and non-library jobs in the Central New York area. We considered relocating, but realized that we wanted some stability in our lives for the next few years. There have been a few nibbles including an offer for a clerical job that Julie turned down, hoping for more professional work.
No serious injuries; J&J OK
On Friday, July 11, a red pickup ran a stop sign and drove into the path of a white van driven by Julie, with June as a passenger. June hit her face on the driver's seat, but her bruises healed within a week without any complications. All others were uninjured. June won't wear just a lap belt now; she insists on a shoulder restraint. The van, owned by Julie's Uncle Ed, was a total loss, but the other driver's insurance will cover it.
