Big Sur Campout Oct 12-13, 2007
This was a small more intimate campout. Just nine of us gathered at The Fernwood
Resort. Located about 70 miles north of Cambria and 30 miles south of Carmel, nestled right on the Big Sur River. It
rained on Friday afternoon making for a very treacherous journey up the coast. With it getting dark by the
time we headed out of Cambria there was fog , rain and rock slides from the rain. Not to exagerate any
but we encountered well over 20 slides, some with rocks ranging from softball size to basketball size. I was very lucky
my friend Paul was with his family in the lead. Not so good for Paul though. We pulled over early to let four cars go by and
from that point for about the next 60 miles no-one else came behind us. That was a clue that we really shouldn't have been
out there. But we made it with no incidents. Those nice cars that passed help throw a few of them rocks out of our way
clearing a small path for us. We finally arrived and the rain conviently stopped at that time. To tired to cook we got a Pizza
at the local hang out. In an unusual restuarant setting we sat on couches besides a fire place. It was a happening spot due
to the rain. Most all of Pauls bedding was wet so he had to wing it. I wish I got a picture of his set up. He took out the
middle seat of his 1967 deluxe and set it acros the front seats. Him and his wife curled up on the floor of the bus and his
son snd daughter on the back and middle seats. It was what you do in a pinch. VW's are so versatile this way and thier drivers
ingenuity together make a good team. In the morning the sun came out and everything dried. Paul was able to set up his tent.
We hiked two miles down to the beach, where the big Sur River meets the ocean, it was a good day for a hike. Saw trout and
crawfish in the river even caught a big crawfish about 6 or 7 inches long a couple of them and you got a meal. Our friends
Brian, Dianna, Teri and Tom all arrived Saturday as well, they avoided the rain and rock slides, but that was all part of
the journey for us. We had one of our gourmet dinners, Chile Verde, Chilli, Dover Sole with steamed zuchinni, Carne Asada,
and rice to start then some smores , of course and triple choclate choclate choclate layer cake. Paul and his family and I
went to bed early, the others went up to the bar to see some sports on the television. Its kinda cool you can do that at a
campground. In the morning we ate some delicious eggs and left over chilli burritos with more triple choclate choclate
choclate layer cake to go with our coffee. It was great company, lovely scenery, gourmet meals, and a nice drive. Home.
