VW Classic Weekend 2008 June 7th~8th
The usual events were going on all over LA too many to mention. For me It was just going to be the Blackstar Campout followed
by the Classic on Sunday. The first year Ive missed OCTO. This year like every year theres always something interesting added
to the mix. Fred' Foosed bus was a big hit all around town. It looks great and Fred loves it. But there was a side project
going on this year that had the whole world buzzing around this story. A gal named Korie posted a question on theSamba.com
for some help in the form of advice to get her hubby's bus back on the road. Well it took off like wildfire. Next thing you
know people everywhere are sending parts, making plans, devising schemes, and all rallying together to fix this bus. Un be
nounced to the Hubby, Will plans were being made. The bus located in Ventura was checked out by samba member P_Dub, Paul went
out and gave it a once over and then posted on what might need to be done. Next thing you know the great community of folks
I am so proud to call my friends start sending parts offering services and basically take over this gals project of fixing
the Hubby's bus. Plans are made to get the bus to Blackstar early so all the donated parts can get on the bus and all the
qualified VW technicians can do the brakes, tune-up,other mechanical stuff that needs be done. The Really cool Blackstar campout
hosts, VTO guys (Vintage Tranpoter Owners)make all the arrangements for the bus to get picked up in Ventura and delivered
to Silverado Canyon on thier dime. Now the plan is coming along OK because Korie has other relatives in on it and the bus
is at the Mothers house so Hubby won't now its gone. As the days go on more and more people get in on the work. Kristine aka
4EYES donates hand made seat covers and curtains. Bill hepls install them with her. Another guy fixs the radio. ABC (Arizona
Bus Club ) offers to take the bus home and do all the body and paint. This little party just keeps growing. So Korie and new
friends come up with a plan to present the bus to Hubby. She tells him there is this said mechanic that will look at the bus
for him and he'll be in town for the long VW weekend, and they need to meet with him at this bus show OCTO.In the meantime
VTO and friends gets the bus driveable in time to get it to Anaheim Stadium for the show. Will unsuspecting of anything going
on is wondering around the show just in awe of all the buses there. They do the raffle and call him up over the loud speaker.
Start giving him shirts bus club memberships stickers decal etc.. and then the take the car cover off his bus. He has no idea
its there or that all these people got together to fix it. What a great surprise. The really cool thing is this still keeps
growing. There are people that followed the thread from afar that still want to be part of the saga. This nice young couple
in a matter of days acquired an entire community of people to have as friends to last a lifetime. These folks opened their
hearts and their pocket books called on their contacts and rallied together for a couple they had never met and knew zero
about, unconditionally gave of themselves to help out another. These are my friends and I am proud to know them. So they let
Will drive his bus from Angel Stadium back to the campout. He hadn't driven it in something like 10 years I believe. He got
to camp for the night in it amongst all his new friends, his wife and new baby left him there to get to know everyone. The
bus needs a new motor so Johnny Salazar has offered to take the bus back home and do this for him. My only help in this whole
project was driving Will home after the Classic, since he had to let his bus go off with the VTO guys. It was nice to have
a passenger in the bus for once and what a great guy. He and his family are very deserving of this special experience again
I'm proud to know them. What I love best about this event is it seems to be one of two were it all happens and I all ways
meet a new friend or two every year. I got to sit with my good Yuma buddies for a while whom I only get to see a couple times
a year. We were up at 5am and headed into the Classic show. I thought it might be a little smaller with gas prices were they
are at but it seemed to be alot bigger. We scored our usual SV2S Club spot on the lawn, the only shade in the entire parking
lot. I just spent the day sitting by the bus and catching up with everyone till it was time to go. On the way home my phone
rang and it was my buddy Mike to let me know I won 3rd place in the show for my bus whoo hoo.Till the next one Peace

Fall Big Sur Campout
Big Sur Campout Oct 12-13, 2007
This was a small more intimate campout. Just nine of us gathered at The Fernwood
Resort. Located about 70 miles north of Cambria and 30 miles south of Carmel, nestled right on the Big Sur River. It
rained on Friday afternoon making for a very treacherous journey up the coast. With it getting dark by the
time we headed out of Cambria there was fog , rain and rock slides from the rain. Not to exagerate any
but we encountered well over 20 slides, some with rocks ranging from softball size to basketball size. I was very lucky
my friend Paul was with his family in the lead. Not so good for Paul though. We pulled over early to let four cars go by and
from that point for about the next 60 miles no-one else came behind us. That was a clue that we really shouldn't have been
out there. But we made it with no incidents. Those nice cars that passed help throw a few of them rocks out of our way
clearing a small path for us. We finally arrived and the rain conviently stopped at that time. To tired to cook we got a Pizza
at the local hang out. In an unusual restuarant setting we sat on couches besides a fire place. It was a happening spot due
to the rain. Most all of Pauls bedding was wet so he had to wing it. I wish I got a picture of his set up. He took out the
middle seat of his 1967 deluxe and set it acros the front seats. Him and his wife curled up on the floor of the bus and his
son snd daughter on the back and middle seats. It was what you do in a pinch. VW's are so versatile this way and thier drivers
ingenuity together make a good team. In the morning the sun came out and everything dried. Paul was able to set up his tent.
We hiked two miles down to the beach, where the big Sur River meets the ocean, it was a good day for a hike. Saw trout and
crawfish in the river even caught a big crawfish about 6 or 7 inches long a couple of them and you got a meal. Our friends
Brian, Dianna, Teri and Tom all arrived Saturday as well, they avoided the rain and rock slides, but that was all part of
the journey for us. We had one of our gourmet dinners, Chile Verde, Chilli, Dover Sole with steamed zuchinni, Carne Asada,
and rice to start then some smores , of course and triple choclate choclate choclate layer cake. Paul and his family and I
went to bed early, the others went up to the bar to see some sports on the television. Its kinda cool you can do that at a
campground. In the morning we ate some delicious eggs and left over chilli burritos with more triple choclate choclate
choclate layer cake to go with our coffee. It was great company, lovely scenery, gourmet meals, and a nice drive. Home.

SV2s 2nd Mugu Beach Campout July 27-29, 2007

Strictley Vintage IIs 2nd Mugu Beach Campout. Held at the Naval Air Weapon
Station (NAWS) at Point Mugu, this was the campout not to miss. Where in southern California on a hot July weekend can you
go and nearly have an entire beautiful beach all to yourselves. We had 13 buses, 3 new
members and family, with 30 people in all camping. It was a great
weekend huge turnout. Weather was good, cool at night, hot in the
day, a little overcast at times, but all round not bad. There was
a fire burning in the Santa Barbara area making for some striking
sunset pics on the lagoon, and a full moon rising on the other
side out over the ocean. There was fishing, wildlife viewing, and alot
of just relaxing. They had an event going on at the same time
so we got front row seats to the Triathalon where Tams boldly
asked the guy from the reality TV show "The Bachelor" to kiss
her hand. We celebrated several birthdays, Joaquins 1st, Rebecca, Esparanza,
Lee, Bridgett and Niya's. We met new friends and spent quality time
with old friends. We had a raging bonfire thanx to fire master
Ivan and a great potluck dinner with everyones specialties, dinner was
gourmet. Thanx to our great hosts the enlisted, Rebecca, Everett and Sean for
all thier efforts in getting us all rounded up and on base and dealing with all the security issues you guys are the best.

All German Aircooled Gathering Paso Robles April 21.2007
All German Aircooled
Show 'n Shine Weekend Featuring Vintage VWs, Speeders & Spyders replicas,
Porsche 912s and 914s!! Saturday, April 21, 2007 Show 'n Shine in the Park Sunday, April 22, Wine country cruise.
Downtown City Park - One of the best Car Show venues in the county! 12th and Spring St., Paso Robles, CA
The second annual All German Aircooled Gathering held in
Paso Robles historic downtown city park. This is a beautiful park in the heart of downtown surrounded by wonderful shopping
and resturants. The Downtown Mainstreet Association also hosted their Antique Treasure Fair in the park at the
same time. I attended this gathering as an alternative to the Red Barn/ Kelley Park shows located 3 hours north of Paso Robles,
having thier shows fall on this same weekend. The event had the threat of rain lingering around but was nice and clear all
day for the show. I was able to display my handcrafted jewelery in the "Recycled Treasures" show and made
a couple of dollars for the gas. There were so many fine German machines to observe from Porsches to a 1974 German Ford
Fire Truck. The Fire truck wasn't air cooled but it was German other than Ford made it. Looking like a gigantic Fridolin with
a vintage blue light and old wooden ladder on top. There were many nice buses. Two very nice type II's were driven there by
Frank & Donna Atkinson of Atascadero. The first of being a really wonderful 1961 European Camper flipseat and subhatch,
detailed with authentic europe travel stickers on the windows. Frank also brought his 1958 deluxe shortened "Shorty" bus,
originally done in 1966 it was the first of its kind to be modified that way, done by Frank himself. This shorty bus has been
in storage all this time. There was a nice assortment of Volkswagens bugs, buses, double cab, bay windows, ghia and a Manx.
I didn't get to spend as much time as I could've checking out all the cars because I was a vendor. Like all shows the best
part is just hanging out in a casual gathering with like minded car folk in such a beautiful spot. It was a very different
show for me to be in. Alot of the people there were for the "Recycled Treasures" show making it very unique
in the way that they were very taken by the cars. I got alot of the usual I remember when and I had one of those or a friend
or neighbor. But there were so many people so intriqued with questions like do you drive it? why is the engine in the back?
you can sleep in your car? and my favorite was all the people trying to guess what year? by remembering where they were
and what they were doing at the time they first remember seeing one. I think thats what I like best about driving my bus it
takes me back to another time, when life was a little slower, alot less complicated, and just a little bit more laid
back. Im in no hurry are you?
